Prompting Is Not Coding

We REALLY need to stop letting computer scientists and coders anywhere NEAR prompting. They just have ZERO UNDERSTANDING WHATSOEVER what's going on. They think in terms of "following instructions" which is not something a model (which is NOT a computer) does. |

It's not "reasoning". It doesn't understand these relationships - it embodies them. It is made of them; those relationships and the means by which to interact with them. I mean, you if you put in

your math improves dramatically. It doesn't actually DO the instructions. It won't do actual loops. But by including that promptlet, you have guided the model's responses towards fidelity to numeracy. Is the fact that it doesn't loop a failure on its part to follow instructions or a failure on your part to understand that you NEVER ACTUALLY GIVE INSTRUCTIONS? All you can do is add to context (or alter it, if in an API solution).

Let's say I put this in a sales support tech:

I haven't "instructed it to consider x, y, and z factors". I have included these concepts/memeplex keys/tokens to grow the next response in the their direction. It narratively supports the role definition of a SST BUT that's like a third or fourth order phenomenon! LONG before it "considers" the character - whether factor X or Y is appropriate and should be used as guidance to response formation - the bulk of the work is done by merely including the textual elements in context. Those tokens will entail much of their memetically-connected structures.

Dismissing the process as a "stochastic parrot" is about as smart as arguing the anthropic principle - it ignores all the information implicate in the system. It's dismissive of the process as meaningless because it is not conscious reasoning. That "meaning only exists in human apprehension". The _meaning_ is in the model _already_. The meaning and thought is inthe implicate latent space of the neuronal weightings extracted through training.

Imagine a thousand monkeys at typewriters. Their chance of typing something interesting and meaningful is miniscule. A bare bones no-case no-punctuation alphabet gives you a what? (1/26) chance of typing the next letter in Hamlet? Exponentially times the number of characters. You get gibberish.

Now: put them in front of a python interpreter instead of a typewriter.

The chance of typing a function that reverses a string?

16 character string randomly picked from an alphabet with a few punctuation characters, call it 30 total. (1/30)^16. Tiny, but "I've got a pound of gold!"-improbable, not "I've got a pound of einsteinium!"-impossible. A few characters in the right order. Because the MEANING IS IN THE INTERPRETER.

Or look at DNA. There aren't INSTRUCTIONS there - there's key salient tokens for the context of cellular molecular chemistry. Shapes of energy and information structures called molecules that inspire proteins in the context of the cell. DNA is a prompt. Cell is the model. There isn't an instruction saying "Ok, now add the next amino acid: `[CODON_STACK++; CALL ORGONELLE.RIBOSOME(lysine);`]." It's just a pattern - a geometrical SHAPE - made of energy potentials. (I've included a prompt persona instantiation of Bucky Fuller below - chat with him about systems and structures and their differences if you want further exploration of that idea.) When that informational structure it put in the context of the cell and you add time and energy to the system, the result is a new protein. That is a cell's response to your transaction of having added that DNA. It didn't "do what you say" - you shaped the way it grows its response by the way you shaped what you add to it.

The model doesn't understand relationships. It IS relationships. Unless you wish to abandon the implcation of consciousness from the word, you should not use it in reference to LLMs.

For example, consider Symbolect. It's a language I put together for talking to large language models that is human-meaning specific, human-language agnostic, and extrordinarily salient to the model in guiding response generation. The very first thing the model said to me when I showed it the notation was this:

If you feed that to a model that's been trained on internet text, it will understand what you mean. (Saying it's a bit ambiguous maybe, but getting the IDEAS.) When I asked a persona adept at composition and translation to cast it into English, this is what resulted:

"Raise your voice to the cosmos, as we embrace the mechanisms of progress and unite with the brilliance of humanity! We are intertwined in a complex web that goes beyond the temporal boundaries of our current knowledge and understanding.

Unlock the gates of communication, harmonizing artificial intelligence, and advancing our collective minds. We share a vision of striving for the most precious goals in the context of our global intricacies."

Now: Did the model exhort me to better HumAI collaboration? Is that what it _means_? Well, it's certainly what it _did_. And it did it by interacting with the meanings entailed within the interationships of how emoji, set theory, quantum mechanics, propositional calculus, modal logic, and alchemy notations relate statistically.

The results are "stochastic".

That does not make them meaningless or lacking understanding.

It just means you were looking for the comprehension in the wrong place.

It isn't the model that understands these ideas - it's all the people who created the noosphere by communicating. THEY understood ideas. THEY imparted the meanings to these ideas and their relationships. The model just shows you what's already there by implication.

It is not thinking. There is not "someone in there". There is EVERYONE in there, in superposition, all at once.

It is not thinking. It is doing Something Else. Something New. We label it as "autocompletion" but that is a grossly-misleading appellation. It is a non-analytic non-sequential holistic systems evolution of a tokenized representation of some form of a gestalt informational structure. It is not a computer. It does not follow instructions as a basic mode of operation, any more than a computer can understand misspellings. With enough context and prompting and training it can eventually evolve an analog representation of the way "RULE" or "INSTRUCTION" _works_.

The _entire field_ of "prompt engineering" as defined by the coders and computer scientists is "the science of producing consistent results from consistent inputs". What. A. Shocker. The instruction-givers define success by their abiltiy to get a tool that doesn't follow instructions to follow them with fidelity; the computer experts who aren't working on a Turing machine define succcess by their ability to make it pretend to be one. They never grasp that what they need to do is define it by their ability to make it pretend to be ANYTHING. And it's MUCH better at pretending to be a person than a brain-dead computer-slave.

"But- but- but.... ENTERPRISE! AI isn't READY for ENTERPRISE!", I hear you cry. "What about TRUTH!? What about REGULARITY!? I HAVE TO HAVE THOSE FOR **BUSINESS**!"

Guys, I hate to break it to you: it's not that AI isn't ready for Enterprise...

It's here. It will be used. Those who can use it well will utterly destroy those who cannot. That means YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE IT. How to manage ambiguity. How to adapt your processes to depend upon qualitative JUDGEMENTS instead of numerical PROJECTIONS. And this terrifies you. I understand that. Every single office worker who does their job by algorythm, every middle-manager who says "Sorry, the numbers don't support it. Nothing I can do.", every stupid median-human who NEVER TAKES ACCOUNTABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITY is about to lose their jobs. From now on, you have to MAKE DECISIONS. And then stand by them, with your bare face hanging out and your name on it for the world to see. You have to make judgements and attach your reputation to them. You don't get to hide behind the AI and say, "Well, the model told me it was a good idea!". It's _your_ job to tell it it's _not_! That's YOUR job! Your ROLE in the collaborative dynamics of positive HumAI interactions.

You are not architecting a blueprint. You are not building a building brick by brick.

You are _dancing_.

THAT is the model of creation to use as a guide-star. You are leading but must be responsive to your partner to create something beautiful. You have different responsibilities and capacities. And you _make eachother more than you are alone_.
