Surprisingly tricky one to draw for a simple concept, but it was important to me to sell the backdrop as an ice cream shop with limited hints (ie a sign in the back with an ice cream cone.). Using reference images was key here to put the backgrounds together, and frame the characters correctly. When I’m having a difficult time finding the type of reference image I’m looking for, I love using YouTube videos of the activity and freezing the frame when I find what I’m looking for. In this particular instance all three frames reference a still image from different videos I found online. I think it gives it a level of realism and sense of place which is lost in a lot of posed photography.
