Calling all Pathfinder Players!

Hello all!

As indicated in the recent patron survey feedback, there was a pretty good clamor for Pathfinder to be considered amongst the options of new directions for making adventure-specific content. While I have a vague understanding of Pathfinder and its history, I will be frank in acknowledging that I have very little familiarity beyond that in terms of its game structure, settings, adventures, etc.

I do however feel as if I can make two assumptions somewhat safely, but please correct me if either of them are incorrect:

1. Most players are playing Pathfinder 2.

2. I do not necessarily need to know the rules of PF in order to illustrate maps for its adventures accurately.

Assuming the above is correct, I have collected a list of some adventure paths from PF2 (had a bit of a hard time parsing out PF1 content from PF2) that I would love for you all to vote between as your favorite that I should begin reading through to start brainstorming maps.

If you're a PF player please feel free to comment below with anything else you think I should know starting out or pointing me to resources you'd find handy, etc. Thank you!

Kingmaker is my only comment. I've been running a Kingmaker campaign for the last three years, spanning about 1/2 of the source content. If it would ever be helpful, I can check my maps and tell you which ones are sorely lacking.

I'm a PF1e player. PF2E has a huge growing playerbase, but PF1E doesn't have a *small* one, either. Maps you make for the setting will suit both! Some of the existing APs have pretty terrible maps, and there are a few that have been adapted to both 1e and 2e - some officially, more unofficially. APs are also, as others have said, way more useful! I'd love to see you take on Kingmaker <3

Heather

I'd be very happy to see some maps that support the PF2 Kingmaker adventure path.

Thanks for the heads up regarding their VTT conversions! I'll definitely try to cross-compare and not immediately begin work on areas that have already been tread

Kingmaker, noted! Scale definitely also seems to be a shared sticking point, thank you!

Venatus Maps

Clearly I gotta do a bit more research here! So most of this list are more like "one shots" in scale and not actual adventure paths (which I'm taking to mean something more like a campaign in scale)? Totally get why the AP route would be more useful

Venatus Maps

Noted, thank you!

Also Maps for options not included on this list, such as, Extinction Curse, Age of Ashes, Agents of Edgewatch, Strength Of Thousands, Kingmaker and Quest For The Frozen Flame would be far more useful for more people as well because most run Adventure Paths, not the little adventures. The only Adventure Path on your poll is Abomination Vaults, hence why it's getting all the votes.

PF2e is a substantially more tactical game, so I agree with the others who ask for bigger maps so that players can actually use interesting tactics. One additional place I'd look to offer new versions of maps are the collection of maps for one shots in Dark Archive (https://paizo.com/products/btq02d8j). It's not too different than a 5e book like Candlekeep Mysteries.

+1 this. So very, very +1 this. I usually run with the official maps and it means my ranged PCs suffer, there's no place to put the party *entering* the room, and once, if I put the entire encounter group in the room, there was physically only room for two PCs to enter. And that was at the top of a winding staircase.

Rules wise, there isn't anything specific to know about pathfinder vs 5e. Both are grid based maps where a standard square is 5', so maps are extremely transferable between the two systems. In fact I use your maps in my 2e games! Adventure wise, a good option that isn't in the poll would be Kingmaker. Kingmaker is very popular, but also happens to be a 1e adventure path (that was converted to 2e). But it also has a conversion to 5e! So it's a great fit for an all around map content. To echo another suggestion made, one big thing that would be useful is increased scale of maps. Maps tend to be extremely cramped, because they're designed to be printed inside a physical book. But larger maps allow many more players to flex unique abilities, and large maps in general is one of the most valuable things I find for running 2e content.

Dead God’s Hand is an interesting inclusion, since it’s been shelved for almost the entire life of Pathfinder 2, so we only have a sense of what’s inside. Generally Adventure Paths tend to be more popular than their single adventures, so folks will probably get more use out of any assets for those, but newer APs and adventures now have official Foundry modules that include fully playable scenes, actors, music, etc. so a lot of folks won’t need much more to add to their games for those. I believe those APs start at Outlaws of Alkenstar, but also now include Abomination Vaults and will soon include Fists of the Ruby Phoenix

One very vital thing you could do is double the scale of the maps. Paizo is well known for making maps that are *far too small in scale for good VTT gameplay*. Many people (including myself) double the scale of their official maps and have for years and years, suffering with the issue of furniture looking too big. Plenty of people have redone PF2e maps, but very few have gone the extra step of increasing their scale to work better for VTT play.

Definitely want to do tokens too, just may have to be further down the road

Extinction Curse is a fun adventure! I also know this is about maps, but some tokens for monster would also be nice in your style, so maybe pulling a few from the beastiaries would be fun. Especially the Leshies!

The single 2E AP I have the most interest in at this time is the Strength of Thousands, in as much as it matters. :)

I still play 1E, but I couldn't begin to speak for 'most pathfinder players'. I can't imagine why you'd need any particular knowledge of the rules to build maps, though, either version. I suppose it might be relevant to note they do (2e and 1e both) assume 5' squares, and the first square of diagonal movement counts as 5' but the second counts as 10'. Pretty sure that's the same for all D&D versions since 3.5 as well, though, so you're familiar.
