Next Patron livestream 19th November, 1600 GMT

Public livestreams are excellent but I'm looking forward to talking to you all in a slightly more...relaxed environment. Hope to see you then, I'll drop a link closer to the time!

On Star Citizen Live streams they ask for questions to have [QUESTION] to be put on the front of any question post so the mods can pull it out and put the good/popular ones in front of the host for them to answer/put to the guests... And they have a LOT of people spamming chat to deal with.

ConvincingIllusion

that is a good idea and i have done something similar before so that could work.

maybe a google doc that a couple folks in chat could transfer questions to for easier tracking, and to reduce folks asking the same question copy and pasted repeatedly

Yes, the triple question marks before and after a legitimate question really do help the visibility in a busy chat stream

moderator's main jobs are to prevent the bad apples (they have message-deleting and limited banning powers), to help delete spam and help the creator with the held messages. they can also post links if that's needed.

Torchyc - Chloe

That kind of moderation tool, they don't have any of. Still, the ???if this were a question, what would the answer to the question be??? convention seemed to help a bit, at least for those willing and able to apply it.

It's a fine line to know what to answer yourself and what to leave to Jill. If it's something directly related to the Fantasy Heroine series I'd leave it. If it's someone asking a question that's been answered 4 times already I think it's probably more helpful to answer it as most of the people on the stream have already heard the answer and that lets Jill focus on fresh questions.

My comment above about moderators was to help Jill keep track of questions that she would want to answer since 5 or 6 messages would appear at once, and then ANOTHER clump of messages, scrolling away so fast! Jill's audience didn't appear to need policing though.

I've never felt comfortable seeing a question go past, addressed to Jill, and I could know the answer and could reply in the chat; but of course I'm not Jill and don't speak for her, so I leave whatever that question was to accumulate in the ever-growing pile. I tell myself this is for the best because public livestreams are rare and it's not like suddenly hundreds of people are going to pile in of widely varying levels of reading comprehension. It looks like chat moderators are people who the streamer has added to The Moderators List for their channel; they both review held messages (before they're allowed through for others to see) and delete messages which have made it onto the chat but really shouldn't have. (Interestingly once they're on the list, moderators stay there for future streams until Jill manually unlists them.) ...I have no idea whether what the moderators see in the way of incoming is as laggy and bursty as Jill reported at the last public live.

How do moderators actually work? Do they need to approve a message before it gets posted or do they 'only' delete messages that are 'inappropriate'? Or do they highlight messages somehow to a sub-chat that Jill can see highlighted messages to help her focus on the wheat rather than the Chaff? Does anyone know? I'm not sure how useful Moderators would have been last night. There didn't appear to be any spammers that needed blocked or messages that needed deleted. There were a few people asking questions multiple times or questions that had been answered already (presumably because they were late to the livestream) that moderators could have answered but we could do that without being moderators. The messages were just coming so fast I could barely read then all, let alone Jill read, decide if it was OK to read out, read out, and respond. Not sure how to turn down the rate of messages. The whole point of a livestream is that people can chat with Jill, otherwise it's just a podcast.

Yesterday There. Were. So. Many. Messages. I don't think I read half of them. You're gonna need SEVERAL moderators to help you keep track when you do that again, Jill.

Ann Brookens

I will put it on my calendar :D

Torchyc - Chloe

Ha! I should hope not! :D

Jill Bearup

…we promise not to need moderation? :)
