In terms of future projects, in order of difficulty I think it goes bracers (least difficult), fingerless mittens (just the thumb), fingerless gloves (some sort of provision for individual fingers), gloves, gauntlets. But I think you could get knit fingerless mittens and attach leather scales relatively easily!

Could the murder dress dagger stab through the scales? Would it protect against a sword slash? (My initial guesses are "no" and "yes" respectively, FWIW)
