“He’s the walking dead!” - Eric on contemporary Sly’s look
On this week’s episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza launches into month two by celebrating the Totally Cool Awesome 80s! First up, we’re talking about the stupidly-titled Rambo: First Blood Part II! How funny is it that this movie pulls a complete 180 on the philosophy of the first film? How great is Sly’s hair in this one? Couldn’t they have had a few more action scenes with Martin Kove? How wild is it that Predator completely ripped off the Rambo covered in mud bit? And why didn’t Murdock get a rockin’ death in this? PLUS: Fellow veterans, Bebop and Rocksteady meet John Rambo!
Rambo: First Blood Part II stars Sylvester Stallone, Richard Crenna, Charles Napier, Steven Berkoff, Julia Nickson, George Cheung, and Martin Kove as Ericson; directed by George P. Cosmatos.

Another one of the movies about rescuing MIA/POWs from Vietnam that is oddly forgotten is Uncommon Valor starring Gene Hackman, Patrick Swayze, Robert Stack, Fred Ward, and Tex Cobb. It's also nuts but would make an awesome episode. (Subtle hint.)

I am surprised the Rambo NES game wasn't mentioned at all here. It's a fever dream retelling of this movie where Rambo is stabbing bats and stuff like Zelda II.
Not like the awesome Sega Master System Rambo where we are shooting people and helicopters with flame arrows. Now THAT is a game to set your watch to.

Horror kill counts might be more acceptable since they tend to be smaller and easier to count. Trying to do an action movie like this where you'd have to account for non-stop gunfire and explosions is where it gets ridiculous.

Regarding Andrew's dig at the kill count: I always was under the impression that Chelsea Rebecca was a real human woman. Jury might still be out on James being a grown adult. Speaking of which, are we finally getting into Tha Hood in October with Dead Meat?

Fantastic as always. I kinda prefer the third movie simply because it has the decency to be utterly stupid as hell AND gives some decent action throughout before the third act.
Also really want you guys to cover Staying Alive. Its one of my favorite bad movies. Just a perfect storm of WTF.

Also wanted to share I worked on Nonnas! The cast is cursed (Drea de Matteo eep) , making you forget about Vince Vaughn's less than stellar "Italian American accent".
The restaurant at the focus of the film is run by a family friend and can confirm, the food is worth the long commute.
Slight film but well worth the Nonnas watch party.

Alarum is the middle English word that later became alarm, and its root is thought to be the Italian expression "all'arme" meaning "to arms", i.e., a call to arms. So it sort of makes sense as a title for the movie.

Hey, Guys!
Allegedly on TOMBSTONE, Kurt Russell replaced George P. Cosmatos, who replaced writer Kevin Jarre -- who was making his directorial debut. Disney was so unhappy with both Cosmatos' & Jarre's footage -- the cast was happy with Russell stepping in and he happily agreed to go uncredited to not cause a scene with the DGA. The rest is history.
For Andrew, you got to me & I caved: weeks after seeing THE ACCOUNTANT 2 and after the last WHM ON-SCREEN LIVE, I cheerfully broke down & got the Airstream trailer popcorn bucket. It was the very last one at my neighborhood AMC.
Thanks for tilting me into the purchase 😎

According to imdb rambo 1 takes place in 1981
According to Rambo 2, Rambo is born 1947, making him 34 y old in 1981 so he’s 38 in rambo
2?
Did Rambo return from Vietnam in 1981?
Or earlier? How old is Rambo supposed to be?
And Trautman??
I’m saying these movies don’t make sense

Now you've got me remembering all of these mediocre comedies from the '80's.....Roger Moore is BLATANTLY parodying his Bond character (to the point where it apparently really pissed off EON) in the first Cannonball Run movie. 😉
Damn yet ANOTHER one: Bruce Willis' cameo in Loaded Weapon One parodies John McClane. 😉

2025-06-03 05:14:12 +0000 UTC
About the self-parody stuff.....you could make a strong case that Cary Elwes in Hot Shots Uno is pretty much parodying his Russ Wheeler antagonist from Days of Thunder just the year before - they're pretty much the same performance. :)
Oh and SHATNER is definitely parodying his Captain Kirk persona in Airplane II....he's hysterical in that movie. 😆
