Update May 2023 with Video!

This month I kept working on levels to make them look final. I also worked on the tech for the last few visual effects that had been on my list for a while such as this 4D snow!

My favorite part of 4D snow is backtracking to a place you have been before and seeing your footsteps "end" at the moment you started moving along the 4th dimension (or to be precise, perpendicularly to your previous slice).

It is implemented by dynamically updating a 3D texture representing the height of the snow at every point on the 3D ground (the horizontal directions are X,Y,W, and the height direction is Z).

I again met up with one artist on the project and we worked together on finalizing a bunch of levels.

It's a strange feeling to be doing art most of the time, as opposed to programming or game design. Also, having to pause doing art in order to program the art features I need takes getting used to.

As I was mocking up the visuals for a mechanic late in the game, I also improved some of the puzzle design for it. I think it is a rare part of the puzzle design that I think still could benefit from small tweaks.

I love how the footprints in the snow become harder to notice over time as the snow continues to fall. What a nice touch 🌨️

It's very interinsting to see how you can explore a concept. I imagine there is periodes in the creative process where you focus mainly on the gameplay and puzzle design. But this game can also be explore visualy, it's fantastic to see a project where art and game-design are think in the same direction.
