One small thing that makes me feel truly immersed in Japanese culture is choosing to stay in ryokan — traditional Japanese inns — whenever I travel, instead of regular Western-style hotels.

I absolutely love tatami rooms. There’s something so peaceful and grounding about them. The faint, clean smell of the tatami straw, the gentle feel of it under your feet, and the way the sliding shoji doors let in soft natural light… it all creates such a calming atmosphere.

Sleeping on a futon laid out directly on the tatami is also a unique experience. Some people find it too firm, but for me, it’s very comforting. It feels closer to the earth, somehow. In the morning, you fold up your bedding and suddenly have a wide open room again — I really like this sense of simplicity and flexibility in Japanese living spaces.

Every time I stay in a ryokan, I feel like I’m stepping a bit deeper into the culture here, not just as a tourist but as someone trying to live and understand it day by day.

If you ever stayed in ryokan, what did you think? do you prefer Western style hotel or ryoukan?
