The logical view point is that he faked it. It’s only explanation for me and I’m wondering why he would put his family through that? Maybe they were in on it?

If his return was making national headlines, surely these people would come forward and offer some answers as to where Steven had been. Since no one came forward, I lean towards him being out of the country which leads me to believe he faked the whole thing. Amnesia is easy to fake.
