How to navigate though auction sites.

. . . good luck with your purchase.

Ralfy, wanted to thank you for this video. I was interested in trying auctions but didn't have the confidence to dip my toe in until I watched this. Since then, I've gone on to (within my firm limit!) successfully win a bottle. Now here's hoping it arrives in one piece! Cheers.

"Currently I have more than a lifetime supply of unopened stashed bottles " . . . the sign of a real malt-mate future-proofing. We all do it. Interesting to hear your experiences of U.S. auction sites.

It goes without saying that you have your fingers on the pulse of the Reality of the climate of the Whisky market. Here in the USA Bonham/Skinner auctions charge a 30% seller fee as well as a 30% buyer fee as well as insurance fee’s which make it cost prohibitive in most cases. Bonham/Skinner has many categories such as antiques, art, jewelry and the like. With such a broad spectrum and continuous auctions the details and descriptions are often lacking. A while back I experimented with selling a small portion of my collection and I had to continually message them with accurate bottle codes, vintages and even then a couple fell through the cracks as far as accuracy. On top of that some Springbanks that “sold “ for $$$ in fact didn’t sell because the buyer defaulted causing months of delays with relisting them. But the auction site still showed them as sold at a false unrealized price. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth making me more than hesitant to do business with them or any other USA auctions. I have also tightened my belt with retail purchases due to the ever increasing cost of living. I exercise extreme restraint with my purchase decisions now and try very hard to only buy occasional must buy/ try. Currently I have more than a lifetime supply of unopened stashed bottles and am focusing on enjoying what I have instead of FOMO on overpriced offerings that frequently disappoint as not living up to expectations. On a side note I’ve recently reviewed the Filey Bay Flagship and also found the neck pours somewhat disappointing but over time in the bottle as well in the glass I’ve slowly begun to appreciate it as the young spirit it is. Cheers John/Just Whisky 🥃
