I got the game on the day of its release as part of our Assignments system on PCGamingWiki. The black bars affecting the cutscenes, dialogue and menu screens were a noticeable problem. However, back then I had to focus on the overall technical review of the game and I couldn't think of a way to bypass the game's protection.
A few months later, I even got a personal request for an FOV changer but still couldn't think of anything beyond uninstalling BattleEye.
Fast forward to now, I managed to bypass the protection from debugging, and so we got ourselves a tiny patcher to remove the pillarboxing. Over 100 hours on my record, nearly 2 years since the game release, and with most people probably having played through it, it's still better late than never, right?
