ACTION BUTTON REVIEWS PAC-MAN

I did it! I reviewed PAC-MAN. It will premiere here at 4pm Eastern Time today.

The review, as per usual, consists of an introduction, six stories, and an epilogue.

Like the DOOM review before it, this PAC-MAN review firmly occupies the category I expect we'll all later look back on as "The Weird Ones." I researched and composed it largely under unsatisfactory working conditions--doing most of my PAC-MAN playing on a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode, etc--while enduring a two-front Landlord Nightmare. What I'm saying is, I wrote and researched this review in a hotel, on top of a mountain, and then in an empty apartment without without access to the internet, air conditioning, my computer, or furniture.

This video has, in fact, actually been done since about a day after I last spoke to you here on this page. I only sat on it for a while because I wanted to be able to say, on the day of the PAC-MAN premiere, that editing on the TOKIMEKI MEMORIAL review is "half finished." I can now confidently say that: and nothing breeds confidence like hyper-factuality. (I'm insinuating I might be more than half finished editing it.)

Perhaps I so strongly wanted to be able to make that promise in this post here because, well: the TOKIMEKI MEMORIAL video finds us finally, for the first time since my review of The Final Fantasy VII Remake, returning all the way back to my original vision for these videos: in summary, I did all the playing and researching and editing myself, right here, in my own desk chair, at my own computer. It has felt pretty good so far, and I expect it to feel pretty good right up until the end. I got a hecka fancy-lookin' layout for this one.

I'd love to type a little bit more text here in a little bit more of a celebratory tone, though the truth is I just want to get back to polishing up the TOKIMEKI MEMORIAL video. I think it's the best "game criticism" . . . thing I have ever made, and certainly the best thing yet on this channel. I mean, I don't wanna throw this PAC-MAN thing under any sorta moving vehicle--call it lowering your expectations. I don't know. I'm just saying: my curse, I suppose, is that I'm always all about The Next Thing.

And man, once ACTION BUTTON REVIEWS TOKIMEKI MEMORIAL has premiered, I can finally, finally get back to streaming video games as I research them. And what better game to start with than . . . well, the one I'll do as a quick lead-in to our several-months-long CYBERPUNK 2077 review process.

In closing, I just want to thank everyone backing me on Patreon. Thanks to you all, I was--for example--able to purchase a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X myself, for the purpose of researching whatever future videos I'll need to research. Instead of having to accept a free console in exchange for some video coverage, I was able to pay for them and enjoy them on my own terms. ("My own terms" currently means they're both still in their respective boxes, though I promised myself I can splurge-purchase Demon's Souls, Spider-Man, and Ghost of Tsushima (and crank up Forza Horizon 4 on the XSX) as soon as I finish the first editing pass on this Tokimeki Memorial review.)

Instead of having to make eighteen-hundred short videos about the PlayStation 5 (Best Controller Ever?!?! Spider-Man is BACK!!?? Demon's Souls: Better Than Bloodborne?!?! I Just Can't Even With This One PlayStation 5 Menu!?) under the arms-akimbo gaze of a grimacing editor-in-chief, you all enabled me to literally research, compose, and produce a, uhh, labyrinthian, frankly bizarre review of literally 1980's PAC-MAN.

I wonder, though, if now, immediately at the start of a brand-new video game hardware generation, is actually the exact correct time to review PAC-MAN? Hmmm. It seems as though I . . . timed this extremely appropriately. Did I do so on purpose?

Find out, later today.

Anyway, I gotta get back to work. (It's Monday, right?)

Another good show

I just bought a Philips Norelco OneBlade Pro from Target so I can be more like, Tim. Now I am one step closer to being a total bad-butt. But, I didn’t really mean butt, if you know what I mean.

James Norton

You often seem like a man publicly masturbating, Tim. I'll be back next week.

Scab120

I came to see if the HVAC outtake was available. I'll be back next week. Hopes are high.

Dustin

I’ve been trying to find the exact rendition of Turkish March he uses for a couple years now

Alex McDonough

Damn my name wasn't on the epilogue. Better luck next time I hope 😬

Lawrence E Lawson

Loved this video! Definitely feel for you on the misophonia around eating; I hate the sound of silverware on ceramics, it makes me feel like I want to run away when I hear it. I always attributed mine to having very high sensory processing sensitivity though, since I get the same response when there’s just too much going on in general (ASMR is terrible for me).

Kaelynn

Saw this in chunks like a dragon quest bedtime story... So many flashbacks to the atari era... I remember playing a version of battle tank on my famicom but it was called battle city instead, spent so many hours in the map creator alone... Thanks for the wild ride, Tim! Hopefully you'll make an action button review of "Policenauts" soon because your 3 hour review would definitely outperform Death Stranding as the ultimate Kojima experience...

Alotless Personal

Really enjoyed this one. The intro was especially well done. Couldn’t be happier to be backing this project and allowing these videos to be so unapologetically their own unique thing. Already looking forward to the next one. Thank you, Tim!

Adam Williams

I think she probbably means Clare de Lune by Debussy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNcsUNKlAKw&ab_channel=Rousseau

Daniel Meissner

Hi, Tim. Keep up the good work. I mean it. Rest on your laurels and I'll pull on your gilded carpet so, so hard you'll unknowingly swap the worst of your body parts.

Scab120

Not gonna lie, I definitely would have watched and thoroughly enjoyed those eighteen hundred ps5 videos! Your shorter-form and often wonderfully over the top content is some of the best out there. But I'm glad you're making the videos you want to make, at the end of the day - and they're still amazing, truth be told. Looking forward to checking Pac Man out!

zacH

Loved this video. I know that a Pac-Man game does not have to understand what makes great the original one to be interesting or fun. So what do you think of Pac-Mania? Also, is there any other Pac-Man that you like? maybe Pac-Pix, Pac 'n Roll or Pac-Attack?

Juan Luis Vargas

Thanks Tim! As a fellow misophonia sufferer, I feel your pain. I wear ear plugs or headphones at every meal.

Eben Sullivan

FINALLY! What an amazing way for me to start my Thanksgiving break. I will pour myself some tea and enjoy the next few hours. Also any merch plans in the future>?

Albert Anticona

This is brilliant and the only reason I’m not done is because I’m playing VIDEOBALL

Squit

There’s some nutcracker in there I think.

Hey, my gf really wants to know what your piano music is. I'm not sure why, but she said quote "you pay for his videos, ask him." Thanks

Why toe??? Why always toe?

I'm here for The Pac - Man. Give me the meandering incisiveness I crave, Tim. Looking forward to the Cyberpunk 2077 streams!

Nathan Noble

Tim, I love you and your work. In these dark times I find your writing and video projects life enriching. So just... Thanks. I can’t wait to watch.

Ross Hamrick

"editing on the TOKIMEKI MEMORIAL review is "half finished."" .... the what

Andrew Silverman

I am READY

Jonathan Merkt

I was already v excited for Tokimeki Memorial before your excitement for sharing it here also, can't wait

nathan

i am excited

Ian

The cover of Labyrinthian has some adult human dude, ala those bad mega man covers, sprinting through a maze as tens of classic white cloth ghosts fly in pursuit behind him. The game of course is nothing like that and instead is a misbalanced cynical Pac-Man clone in which the player moves far too fast for it be difficult and the sound effects sound like crap

Stephen “Seven” Perteet

I'm looking forward to it! (All of it. Super excited.)

Billy Monks

Labyrinthian sounds like a bad Pac-Man clone for 2600. I’m hyped

Stephen “Seven” Perteet

🐐 can't wait Tim

Spencer Ward

Yay! Can’t wait :D
