Newsletter: week of Oct. 21st

New iPads, new action cameras, and this very good looking EV. Here are the things I watched, read, listened to, and thought about this week.

tech-y stuff i cant stop thinking about:

• Quest app lets you visualize your Wi-Fi signal

  I once made a video about mapping my wifi signal and wowee this looks much cooler and far easier!

• Action cam plateaued

  As action cam season comes to a close I cant help but notice that that market has come to almost a full stop in regard to innovation. For years the updates have been small, but this year it felt like GoPro, Insta360, and DJI were all scraping the bottom of the barrel for any and all improvements to image quality. A large issue that keeps these devices from being able to improve is the waterproof housing they are built into. Having no airflow creates a real problem for heat dissipation. And a lot of heat is generated when 4k or 8k footage is being recorded. It's such a problem that I have heard rumblings of companies thinking about going back to external waterproof housing. But in my opinion, the year over year refresh cycle should be the first thing to change.

• Creators being honest about not knowing everything

  I saw this threads post and also got the below comment on one of my videos this week. And yes, this is the energy I love to see! When I started making videos for the internet seven years ago I felt pressure to know every last spec about every last gadget, to be a master at filming and editing. But as I grew more comfortable telling my stories and sharing my insight I learned that no one actually knows everything. And that using LUTs and shooting in auto is not only perfectly fine, its actually what a lot of others are doing too. So go forth not knowing everything! You can still be wildly successful.

• Severance Season 2 Teaser

  My partner, Hannah, and I loved season one of Severance. We went so far as to temporarily subscribe to Apple TV+ for it. So Han, get that subscription renewal ready!

• Tim Cook on How Steve Jobs Recruited Him and More

  I'm fascinated by people, so seeing Tim talk about himself rather than Apple is exactly the type of interview I want. My biggest takeaway from this interview was Tim saying that Steve Jobs taught him to not be so proud that he couldn't change his mind. And that the two of them often changed each other's minds about things.

• Lebron's advice for his son

  The last two months have a been full of intensity for me. All sorts of numbers in my life are moving faster than they ever have before. I have laid awake thinking about every last thing I may have done wrong and how everything could just crumble if I don't work harder. Advice like "just play carefree" feels really good to hear. Because I think it's true that we all shine brighter when we don't put the weight of the world on our shoulders.

• This insanely good YouTube video from a creator I have never heard of

  I don't know who Henry Kidman is, but holy hell he can make a great video. There are so many cool transitions, a very solid story, and loads of humor packed in this video about a camera slider. Plus I learned a thing or two! 11/10 would rec

things i listened to:

• Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso: Tiny Desk Concert

  I had not heard of Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso but now I'm locked in. Amazing rhythms/musicians + unreal sunglasses.

• A walking playlist I made for our Patreon Bud Wouter (YT music, Spotify)

  Yesterday while intro-ing themself, Wouter from the Netherlands mentioned they were looking for a hiking/walking playlist. So I devoted myself to the cause! It's a bit all over the place in terms of genre, and my transitions are rough, but now that I have been jamming to it for 24 hours... this hits. Trade me a playlist anyone?

• Kara Swisher's Life in Seven Songs episode

  Much like the Tim Cook interview above, there is nothing I love more than people talking about being people. And while news and Silicon Valley are topics I enjoy hearing Kara talk about, this interview shines a light on her personal story. Plus its only 30 minutes.
