To answer your heater question, it depends on the home. My obaa-san has a lot of tatami in her home, so she didn't have a heater. My friend, who lives in apartments, in one place he had heated floors and the kotatsu, so he didn't need a heater, but in his new place, he bought a space heater. From my understanding, they can be pretty dangerous depending on the home, since a lot of Japanese housing materials are very flammable. You'd think they'd learn their lesson after WW2 (one of the most ruthless war tactics we used in Japan was dropping fire raids on civilian homes all over Japan, because the houses would burn up quickly) But ya, like Death2boredom explained, the Kotatsu have heaters underneath them, so they tend to rely on that for warmth. My poor friend, before he got a space heater, he would be playing FFXIV with me and whining the whole time that he was too frozen to use his combos, because he had to sit up to play (opposed to fully laying under the blanket of the kotatsu) so he had to wear layers of sweaters and a jacket and eventually he broke down and started wearing gloves, even tho they're inconvenient for playing with a keyboard. 😅 Japanese homes don't have a lot of insulation either, making it that much worse.
