86 Episode 5

Comments

One thing that often goes unnoticed is that the shadows of the couple on the stairs changed to shadows of Shin and Lena, to reflect Lena's imagination.

Haisoh

An 86 reaction a week, keeps the Legion meek.

A little bit of trivia as to how the para-raid works from exposition in the novel that wasn't explained in the show very well: It basically lets people connect to the collective unconscious of humanity, letting them share their senses with each other. So if someone talks to you, you are actually hearing them through their own ears. Other senses can be shared, but they are much more information heavy and can overload the brain quickly.

Regarding my comment about propaganda in the previous video, Steph got the point, although I was referring to modern Russia and its “neighbor” Ukraine xD To understand this, imagine that the US has only one party, led by a small circle of people, or even one person, and absolutely all media outlets are subordinate to this party. For several years, they have been propagating that your neighbors, the Canadians, are Nazis and must be destroyed. I think it's hard for you to imagine, but that's what happened between Russia and Ukraine. (Of course, the old Soviet propaganda against Nazism was also superimposed on this, meaning that the basis for the propaganda was already laid in people's minds; all that remained was to associate specific enemies with the label “Nazis”). Although Steph misunderstood me a little, the essence is correct. at one time, the USSR had a highly developed system of “informants,” by the "SMERSH" (which literally means “death to spies”) structure convinced people that their neighbors were potential spies. This was especially cruel in the GDR (the part of Germany occupied by the USSR). According to statistics, 1 in 50 of the GDR population worked for the STASI (Ministry of State Security), spying on and informing on their neighbors and colleagues, after which those neighbors or colleagues “disappeared.” Some did it voluntarily for ideological reasons, while others were blackmailed by the STASI... I don't think it's necessary to mention the Jews in Germany. After just a few years of propaganda, they were no longer considered human beings... Propaganda does not stand still; it evolves. Nowadays, it is fashionable to “overload citizens with news.” Previously, there was no internet, and propaganda could act more directly. Now that people have access to many sources of information, this method does not always work. Therefore, totalitarian regimes have come up with the idea of “oversaturating” the population with versions of events. They throw out dozens and hundreds of versions through various media outlets, from intelligent to stupid, without evidence, without anything. Reliable foreign publications simply cannot refute them all, and people simply drown in this information. They cannot understand what is true and what is not. There are so many versions that the truth, confirmed by facts, is simply lost. People become oversaturated. They need to live their lives, so they become apathetic, apolitical, obedient, and stop following the news altogether, simply going with the flow controlled by the government. A random “funny” fact about living in the USSR: my parents told me how they worried about the US at the time in the USSR. On TV and in the newspapers, they showed and told how people in the US were starving, that there were no jobs, and so on. My parents were glad that they were born in the USSR... It was the 1980s, and the USSR was experiencing a total shortage of everything and economic decline, but people believed... PS. I understand why I was misunderstood a little. I use a translator to write these long texts. I am learning English from your videos, and I understand it perfectly, but I cannot write these essays/comments on my own 🥲

This episode was such a huge bombshell for me (and likely for the majority of the audience lol). So if it's not bad enough that the 86 are being forced to fight and die against the Legion. But here we learn the Republic's intel on the Legion is seriously flawed and due to their policy of not allowing the 86 to bury their dead, is essentially feeding the Legion's war machine - making them stronger even. For me this episode was the one that really started to make things click with some of the previous dialogue in past episodes. There have been quite a few hints regarding the Legion, Black Sheep, Shepherds, and Shin up to this point. If you recall back in episode one where Shin was collecting Kujo's/Black Dog's emblem from his Juggernaut, Raiden came up to Shin and vaguely asked "Was Kujo able to go?" and "What about brother?". So now we know Shin was not simply just putting Kujo out of his misery but was also making sure his brain would not be intact. And then we also get the first reference to Shin's brother...and now we know it was about whether Shin heard his voice during the battle. A couple more hints were in episode 2: 1. The scene where Raiden and several others were scavenging for the food in some town ruins, Theo syncs up to warn the Legion are on the move. Prior to this scene, we saw Shin enjoying his book and then it cuts to a shot of a side profile of his face including his ear and then we hear the "static", which we now know to be the Legion. Theo also mentioned "no Shepherds" this time to which Raiden replies "it will be a duck hunt then" to imply how much easier it is to fight the White Sheep Legion. 2. Near the end of the episode where we see Spearhead relaxing having dinner and doing some playful target practice with cans and their handguns, Anju brings Shin some sort of baked good while he's reading. She asks him about the book he is reading and Shin replies that when he distracts himself with reading, he can stop focusing on "it"...and then it cuts to a shot of Shin's ParaRAID implying something that we now know to be the voices of the Legion that he constantly hears. It's details like this that really brings up the level of enjoyment for me regarding this show! Also regarding the issue of Shin trying to warn the Republic, it is heavily implied that the Republic just won't listen to anything the 86 has to say. Recall Lena's conversation with Annette about the mystery of Spearhead's previous Handlers. Annette and her team tried to investigate but hit a wall when the powers that be wouldn't even entertain the idea of bringing Undertaker on their plane to transport him to HQ for an examination. Now imagine Shin telling them about Black Sheep, Shepherds, and the whole false assumption about the Legion deactivating in two years. It would probably sound like complete insanity to the Republic. And more like one 86's desperate attempt to get the Republic's policy reversed so the 86 can bury their dead.

Congratulations. With episode 5, you've officially left the shore and started the voyage to the sea of the story, and with the next episodes onward we'll be diving DEEP. Well, you'd better BUCKLE up because it will be one hell of a roller coaster ride! One that will stuck with you for a long, long time, especially with how perceptive and critical the both of you are. The rest of your questions will slowly be answered starting next week! And don't worry, there's not a single plot hole to be found. The author crafted and written the story so meticulously that the more you read, the more you can really tell that she has thought of everything from the beginning to the end thoroughly; this is the kind of story that someone has spent months-if not years drafting, researching, and lamenting. It's that good.
