Funny how maomao the cat basically has the same job as maomao, chasing down rats/people that threaten the clinic/ the Palace

Dragons like Bananas

A little detail in the season 1 intros I just noticed. In the imagery at the end of OP1, it shows Jinshi looking back at MaoMao while she does not look back and continues walking forward. In OP2 they are both looing back in the imagery at the end. No idea if it means anything, but I thought it was interesting. Also, regarding the cat in the lyrics and all the other cat references. In chinese, MaoMao's name translates to CatCat (at least according to another reactor I saw).

The complexity of character based writing systems was one of the impediments to increasing literacy unfortunately

Jonathan Conway

It hasn't been confirmed in novel or anime, but the author has hinted at the old lady is actually Maomao's grandmother which would explain why she took care of maomao's mom since It was her daughter

Wes and Steph always have amazing insights during their commentary. Also rewatching this, I didn't realise how early in season 2 episode 1 Shisui was shown on screen, although face covered.

It's funny how the show is doing the same thing it did last season. Now we are more ready for it but still some things go above our heads. They put a lot of pregnancy-type dresses to see which of the concubines will buy a lot of it. Bring in ingredients for abortion-drug Look into who would want to use that knowledge Give them info Now we know how it played out as it's a reupload but man they really give you every hint you need to figure it out yourself

A bit of knowledge about learning logographics as a guy learning Japanese: I don't know exactly how it is with Chinese symbols, I know they have phonem-system for westerners. In Japanese they have 3 different reading systems: Hiragana - basically phonem system, Katakana - used mostly for borrow words from west or onomatopeia, Kanji - chinese characters taken directly from chinese writing system a long time ago. If you want to read this comment I advice you just check it out in google, it will make explanation easier. When you start learning Japanese, you first learn Hiragana and Katakana, they work mostly the same, one symbol represents one sound. What it allows is reading through Furigana (basically on top of Kanji you have written how to read that kanji in Hiragana). As for now there is around 2200 Kanji in use, the more complicated ones are made from simpler ones. Like the 2nd Kanji from Xiaolan's name (27:20) it is made from 艹 - kanji element used in plant-meaning Kanji 門 - meaning gate 東 - meaning east All of it means Orchid, with first Kanji meaning little (Xiao in Xiaomao is the same one) So her name means Little Orchid and it makes sense because she is our little orchid. The most efficient way now to learn Kanji is with RTK method, so you learn them in a system made by James Heisig, learning from simpler to more complicated Kanji, and create a story with them, imaging how those elements interact with each other. edit. I just found out that Orchid in China was representing "Child's innocence and thoughtfulness". That tracks. She's not only innocent, but is also thoughtful about her future, or how she wanted to learn read and write be fair with person who gave her book.
