Because of the plots of Father his country really was being attacked on all sides, BY DESIGN. If they didn't fight back then everyone he knows and loves WOULD have been killed by Ishval and the other states + nations surrounding them.

2025-02-24 03:45:32 +0000 UTCLoving the journey! Agreed also on Kimbley being sort of Nietzchean (and Social Darwinian) in the premium he places on creating one's values and strength. Obviously, there's a more positive version of this (accepting and overcoming difficulties, wrestling with existential matters and proceeding amid uncertainty, etc., too), so I guess it's actually somewhat consistent for him to respect other values as equally valid, even if he thinks time and power only vindicate some. He respects consistency. Also, so glad my boy Pride has appeared!

2025-02-23 18:48:55 +0000 UTCOne detail about Doctor Knox which the anime does not mention (but the Manga does) is that he had so much PTSD due to the Ishvalan war that he would start thrashing around in his sleep in panic/chaos. One time his wife tried to comfort him and the doctor, mistaking her for an enemy soldier, tried to kill her. That incident made him decide to distance himself from his family.
