Great reaction. As this is fantasy based on Imperial China, punishments were harsh and extended to entire families even if they were innocent. And furthermore, the reason why school exams is a thing is because the practice of examination of the masses comes from Imperial China.

Wes And Steph

Wes last week: At least we didn't poison our mistress. Dumb bitch. Wes this week: I don't wanna hear jack from you, shut up. We'll scrap you. All of you. If Wes was a woman and was a head lady-in-waiting in this show, he'd be one of the most sassy ones lol his mistress would be so lucky

Just a clarification, on the foster sibling part between the emperor and ah duo. Her mother is his nursemaid and the translation could also be milk siblings. The confusion about how maomao's sisters don't know jinshi is because they never met before. There were no photographs back then, so you wouldn't recognise someone unless that person wore status signifying clothes or accessories like hairpins or they've seen them before. Added to that, people of higher status were not often in public seen especially people from the palace. There was also certain etiquette in dealing with people higher ranked than you which will be shown. The confusion about the baby swapping will be more difficult to explain without spoilers. The light novels go more into depth about it. Especially about how much the characters know about the situation and the motivations plus implications of their actions and future actions. But a small reminder would be to rewatch the garden party episode and carefully listen to maomao's monologue about the baby swapping, especially the phrasing.   And then a little bit of historical context. Slavery did exist, people could be sold by traffickers, their families or choose to sell themselves. They would then have a contract signifying their slave status and that contract would be given to whoever bought you. To which place you would be sold to and how you would be treated depended on luck. With great luck you would be sold to a high ranking family and rise in position and with kind masters who might even set you free. But they could also use you for hard labour, punish you or give you away at will. People from brothels on the other hand, have a debt. The cost for buying them, the cost for teaching them and daily costs continuously grow. So they have to be bought out by either themselves or customers and there are also time limits sometimes for contracts. But majority never manage to free themselves and escaping would mean death if caught. Also in ancient china and even now, people are not seen as an individual but as part of a family. So whatever they do, they will represent the family. One person's mistakes will reflect badly on everyone and they were often controlled by their family due to the importance of reputation and filial piety. Highest level of punishment was execution for people related to the criminal to the 9th degree of relation. Laws regarding all of this differ per dynasty, but this is just the general gist. Then a small detail of calling the concubines princesses is again a translation problem. There were different ranks of princes and princesses and way of writing them. Those born in the imperial family would be considered first rank . Those more distantly related to the imperial family like cousin would be second rank or lower. Besides that, it was possible for people to be granted a lower prince or princess title due to merit. Children of the regional lords of the territory/province would also be called prince or princess in translation. Depending on the dynasties there were vassal princes from the imperial family. But in this case it seemed more likely that the regional lords or leaders are not related to the imperial family. So Gyoukyou is a princess from the western territory/province, not a foreign land. And regional lords or leaders usually means clan leader. In ancient China some clans were equal or more important than nobles or lords in the region/province they were in. Clans were important big families that had power or influence or status or all of the above, especially in their own region and sometimes in court/capital. It was mentioned that her family is from the western capital. There were two major capitals in some dynasties. And replying to a previous comment in regards to incest, you were allowed to marry cousins from maternal side, but not from paternal side due to different surnames. This show seemed to be based of of the Tang dynasty, but there are elements of the Song and Ming dynasties especially in regards to the bureaucracy and the imperial examination.
