2024-11-26 02:39:31 +0000 UTCYeah, the Libero position didn't even exist until 1998 so he never really had much of a chance. I think Washijo's obsession with height also causes him to unnecessarily compare himself to Hinata when the more apt comparison would be Nishinoya. He ignores all of the physical attributes where Hinata is a massive outlier and only focuses on his height. Hinata is just as much of an athletic monster as Ushijima, just in different ways. Hinata may not be tall or muscular but he has insane reflexes, agility, speed and stamina. Not to mention his frankly ridiculous vertical leap. If Hinata didn't have these attributes then, much like Washijo , he would never get to play unless it was in his 3rd year as a Libero. Quite simply, Washijo and Hinata are starting from completely different places in much the same way that a taller player would.

2024-11-23 08:46:31 +0000 UTCregarding ushijima's annoyance with hinata, it's more of a thing where hinata is genuinely bad at most things in volleyball. he can't receive, can't serve, his blocking is average - but he has the potential and he can score. so ushijima is annoyed because he sees potential, but he doesn't see any reason for why hinata should be a starting player because he's not there yet. and regarding tendou, shirabu explained this in episode 3 - he does think, he observes body language and cues quickly while also counting on his intuition, so yes, it's both!

2024-11-22 00:16:06 +0000 UTCRIP to coach Ukai's voice actor. that last line was so incredibly touching and it was delivered with so much emotion behind it. i also just wanna highlight Semi (#3 on shiratorizawa) because according to the player stats we get in the manga, he is the second player on the team (only behind Ushijima), and on par in skill with Oikawa, was well-known during middle school and his first two years of high school, yet he preferred to give up his starting position before changing his playstyle to only service Ushijima. I think that's honestly really commendable and brave. In the end, he didn't get replaced by any fault of his own, but because he simply didn't fit the coach's philosophy. I think it's also what would've happened to Oikawa had he chosen Shiratorizawa as well, and I wish we could've gotten more of the commentary from the coach that we got on both Semi and Shirabu on this particular instance, and overall what we got of both characters that was cut out from the anime. can't wait for next episode!!! <3

2024-11-21 20:42:33 +0000 UTCThat scream at the end was the last line of coach Ukai's VA (young one). He sadly passed away, and starting from next episode a different actor will voice Ukai.

2024-11-21 18:46:16 +0000 UTCDuring the old coach’s time in highschool, volleyball was more rigid when it came to positions you could play if you're short. The coach was legitimately not allowed to play how he wanted because he was short. I think his perception of Hinata is a lot like how older siblings perceive their younger siblings (at least in my culture)- “why are they so spoiled by our parents? Why do they get more understanding and leeway than I did growing up?” its too late for that coach to play volleyball how he wish he could. All he can do is pass down what he was taught: “strength lies in height”
