Rem 10/10 best girl. As far as the Rem vs Emilia, I think its possible that Emilia is the worst match for him. I would even put Crush, Felt, Petra, and Betty above Emilia. However, this is a fantasy isakai, so the MC can have his #1 Sylphy, #2 Roxy, etc.

Thanks for the response, I honestly agree with a lot of your points. I definitely didn't make it clear enough, but I think Rem and Subaru would be better as well. The whole problem is once again, choosing who you love. I've seen and even been in adult relationships that fall apart because one or more parties either fell out of attraction, or began having feelings for someone else.

First watching this show, the scene where the White Whale appeared is by far one of my favorites. Subaru's ringtone mixed with the cutouts of the camera and sound was so eerie and felt so full of despair. The charge scene with Subaru leading it is also really cool, how everyone was frozen with fear, and yet the weakest one in that army was the one leading it, therefore bringing everyone back to their senses. Even Crusch was frozen until she saw Subaru with his fist raised high.

The author wrote the long dialogue between Rem and Subaru in this way on purpose, and for good reasons. Everyone can feel Rem's deep, heartfelt declaration of love to Subaru, then the shock when Subaru responds with his love for Emilia. But that's the surface, there's the subtext, what happens behind this between Subaru and Rem. This dialogue is emotionally powerful, masterfully written in its structure and what it actually tells. 1) As Rem's confession is, on purpose, really beautiful and pure, it moves everyone. So Subaru's rejection shocks, on purpose. Many react to this out of "anger" towards Subaru. However, any declaration, no matter how beautiful, doesn't mean you have to feel the same way, or give up your love for someone else. The Thing is Subaru loves Emilia from the start. An unrequited love, and yet a complete devotion...Subaru and Rem are in the same situation (this will become clear to you a little later). So, what is Rem actually saying, and why does the author have Subaru respond in this way? 2) Subaru is in the depths of despair, feeling powerless, pitiful, useless, expressing feelings we all know when faced with huge adversity, with a mountain too big to climb. Through the editing, we understand that he also expresses his pain at having seen his loved ones tortured and killed. Repeatedly. Of having been rejected, not understood, not believed. Of the physical pain of his deaths and wounds. And of course his flaws, which he's facing up to for the first time. They're all he can see now. -> The starting point of the dialogue is a head-down Subaru who chooses abandonment and escape, with Rem as a "consolation". And a silent love. Rem then expresses her love in return. She tells him that this Subaru is not useless, that he has saved her life in many ways. She tells him about the Subaru SHE sees, a Subaru who has performed acts of kindness and perseverance. A Subaru who is her hero, who also has great qualities and virtues. Here, Rem doesn't just tell him that she loves him, but also why she NEEDS him to be what he should be. And Subaru understands that he wants to become this hero for her, that she will be his strength, his motivation to become better. He knows it's going to be difficult, but he'll face these difficulties for Rem. Becoming a hero not for himself but for someone else. -> The finish point is Subaru with his head raised to the sky, determined to become the hero Rem needs. Rem's sake as a motivation and goal. And a shared love, even if it's not exactly the same for both of them. 3) However brutal Subaru's response may be, he shows here the deep respect he has for Rem by not hiding the truth from her but, on the contrary, by revealing it fully, by laying himself bare to her. All the while knowing the harm it can do to Rem and the harm it does to him to hurt her, all the while knowing that it would have been easier but less honest and respectful not to. To put it plainly, in this dialogue, each opens up completely to the other. A special bond is created between them, and even if Subaru's love isn't romantic, it is a real and deep one (it's not only romantic love that can be sincere and deep, Subaru loves Rem way more than you think), and he offers this love to Rem. He also offers her the promise of being the hero she sees in him. She understands that, hence her reaction and response. A love with which they support each other. So yes, Subaru doesn't respond positively to Rem's romantic love, but there's still a declaration of love from both of them. That's why this dialogue is, in my opinion, actually very interesting and beautiful for theses characters development. And there're other aspects that I haven't talked about here.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I don't see it as an adult. Perhaps we're similar in age, but most adults I've seen who watch this all share the same real-world view on Subaru x Emilia > "Sometimes the person you love, isn't the right person for you, and in turn, you overlook the best option (Rem)". A good example, given Subaru, is a young man himself, would be to compare it to real-world young women, often wanting a "bad boy", or easily falling for a guy who doesn't meet her needs, which can be a bit shitty to her. Still, it's the initial oomph they pursue, the fascination if you want to call it that. As women age, particularly in their mid-20s to early 30s, you see that behaviour at large vanish fast, as experience and also biology start to crave the needs over the wants. I'll refrain from discussing season 2, but even after season 2, I think he pairs far better with Rem. Realistically the best partner "for you" is someone you're physically, mentally, and emotionally attracted to, and in that person, someone you trust, confide in, respect, value. But ultimately, someone who without asking makes you be the best you that you can be. Up until now, while it's his flawed character, Emilia repeatedly brings the worst out of Subaru, it's not her fault, but she does. Rem by comparison is the only reason this story continues from this point. Heck even from the view of the "What If" where it shows Rem and Subaru's future if they ran away, living happily until death. The same can't be said for Emilia, and while so many couples these days just give up easily on love art small hurdles, love should never be something that truly is "DIFFICULT", yes it should have its battles, but not to the extent Subaru has to fight to TRY and pursue Emilia. I will add, that I don't think Emilia is the worst partner for him that is possible, but I also just think when I look at either season and think of "Emilia and Subaru dating" I see "first love" type stuff, honeymoon phase AS HECK. When I observe the concept of "Subaru and Rem dating" it's all "actually, they'd make a great couple and likely die together". Oh fuck it, both ships are shit, let's tart shipping Emilia and Rem (jk... unless :o)

To prelude, I don't think at this point in the anime it's wrong or even uncommon to root for Rem. I did so myself. I think it's important to know that no matter how beautiful a confession is, the person receiving it doesn't have to reciprocate. We don't choose who we love, its a mysterious and fickle thing. Since day 1, Subaru has felt like Emilia was the only person in this new world that cared for him. Even as new people are introduced to him, they never came close. Every loop, Subaru becomes closer and closer to Emilia while everyone else feels relatively further away because, in his perspective, he's way less familiar with them. At this point in the series, Rem loves Subaru because, like him with Emilia, he's the only person who truly cares for her. Even her own sister's become a near second place. So yes, while it breaks my heart that Subaru still loves Emilia after Rem's confession, I fully understand it. He could have been a hundred times more grateful in the moment, but as we've understood it, he's always had a problem thanking people. How does Subaru respond at the end of the confession? With what is essentially "I'm sorry, I'm in love with Emilia." A major theme that he has to constantly battle, sorry v.s thank you, and that he can never really express thankfulness. As for Subaru's love for Emilia; I think they are genuinely a good couple, the problem is that all of the groundwork for the relationship Subaru's experienced isn't there in the current set-in-stone history. Almost every loop he was able to spend time with her, she genuinely appeared to at least get a crush on him, or even fall in love. Both of them seem to have such an innate understanding of the other, like when Subaru was able to immediately understand her dislike of feeling like she owed someone, and immediately tried to gently cater to that, or when she calmed him down while he essentially had a 2-day breakdown at Roswell mansion. Anyways, thank you for reading my long rant, loved the reaction. My favorite part as always is the discussion afterwards.

Congratulations you've finished the prologue! The internet exploded when this episode aired It's very rare to have a helpless situation from a characters perspective also seem helpless to the viewers but they do a great job setting it up. I loved the back and forth that lasted for a long part of the episode, sort of hate the trope of good guy says a few sentences to bad guy and suddenly feels bad/changes their ways. Needs to be worked through. Also loved that - he hated himself for thinking he could change with simply being a in a new world from square one, and what brought him back to his senses was yet another start (this time from zero lol). Really makes you question, if you could redo anything could you even fundamentally change who you are without effort into that issue?

I had the complete opposite, I thought the choice was obvious to be with Rem. But you like who you like, nothing you can do about it. Rem already knew he's in love with Emilia, and she didn't want to run away as being someone he settled for, she wanted to be his first choice. But no matter where you stand, everyone can at least say Rem deserves better

Yeah that "I love Emilia" line would make anyone cringe. But to be fair to Subaru, Rem did chop off one of his legs during the mansion murder mystery arc earlier in the season and then continuously bashed him with the her morningstar weapon, so can't completely blame him for not loving her back

When I first saw this anime at 18 or 19 I shipped Subaru and Emilia way more than Subaru and Rem and now that I’m in my late 20s I honestly can’t even understand why I thought that other than I was an immature teenager and so is Subaru which is why I agreed with his choice then lol.

During the previous loop Anastashia wanted to learn about what Crush is buying bc she thought that Crush planned to kill the competitors. The way the anime protrays the negotioating makes sense but also has cut out alot of relevant info. Like Rem was secretly negitiong with Crush on Roswaals behalf for an alliance. Thats one of the reasons Rem was there.

I'm not denying that. Indeed he loves and cares for Rem. His love for Emilia just simply cannot be overturned. After accepting Rem's support, Subaru strengthens his resolve to save Emilia. Also finally accepting that what he has been doing was wrong and selfish. He needs to change, and he will do that with himself and his relationships with others. Starting over from Zero 😄

A theory I had when I was watching this episode years ago was that Subaru's love for Emilia isn't normal and he got succubused by the witch of envy who is somehow related to Emilia. I mean come on, who says no to that. Btw there's a short chapter made by the author of a story "If Rem", like if he chose to escape with Rem at this moment. It's fun to read.

I think to understand Subaru's attachment to Emilia over Rem is that she was his emotional support first and for a lot longer. Rem just came into the picture not too long ago, and their relationship didn't exactly have a great start lol. For the entire mansion arc it was mostly about trying to build connections with Rem, Ram, Roswaal etc to earn their trust and support. Soo whenever he failed and died horribly, it was Emilia (and Beatrice at times) who was the one consistent light of kindness and peace he could have amongst the trauma he suffered. Can't forget that lap pillow where he was able to vent and cry his feelings out to her and she listened patiently. To have a woman who will listen and not judge you as you cry your heart out to her.. its pretty easy to understand why Subaru fell in love with her. Rem does the same thing too, but the first impression and longer time of support from Emilia just can't be overwritten in Subaru's mind and heart. He definitely cares about Rem as we saw that he was willing to jump off a cliff and die to save her. But.. his heart belongs to Emilia. We can comment all we want about Rem and how she deserves better.. but Subaru is his own person with his own feelings. He isn't a self insert. This is his character. Plain and simple. But I do agree.. a thank you and acknowledgement of Rem would've been nice 😂 she helped him back on his feet and he didn't thank her haha. But anyway the heart doesn't lie. And love is just something we will never understand.
