MTV Crib Tour of Hawaii's Largest Homeless Camp [DLC]

The "Sanctuary" is a massive homeless encampment built on a 50-acre plot of land right beside the beach on the edge of the Wai'anae Boat Harbor on the west side of Oahu. The residents here have their own self-governing society with rules that each tenant must abide by.

The "Sanctuary" also has unofficial leaders, an unofficial "police department", and plans on relocating all of the residents to a privately purchased piece of land eventually.

The communal sections of the camp were extremely well-organized, friendly, and clean (mostly). However I did see large piles of trash that must have taken months if not years to accumulate in certain portions of the village.

While 2/3rds of the population here is native Hawaiian, the leaders here tell me anyone is welcome to come and live here as long as they adhere to the rules, and respect the other tenants: if not, they will be dealt with. No B.S. is tolerated otherwise.

Last year with Kevin, I stumbled upon this place but we never ended up popping in. This time around, we brought 10 Costco pizzas and said hello: Surprisingly: the residents were open to having a conversation, being interviewed, and giving us a tour.

As of my understanding, this is the largest known homeless camp in all of the Hawaiian islands.

Insane experience walking around this place. Can't believe how massive it was, and how it has not been swept yet. Glad they have a place to live for now!
