(I was trying to post some of this story to BruMia Instagram but there's a text limit. Most people over here probably know the story, but, here's the extended version of my Instagram post)
I have a story… about Mia’s butt! That’s kinda how we met. It was our sophomore year in college. Mia and I had classes together. My roommate liked Mia and wanted to ask her out. I was unaware he liked her. I had just asked a girl out over the summer, who my roommate had already met. I was happy and not looking for a new girlfriend at the time. My roommate could be a tad insecure at times though.
Mia and her boyfriend had broken up following a rough freshman year together. On Halloween, Mia wore some very sexy tight shiny black pants as part of her costume.
Back at the dorm, my roommate was eager to know what I thought of Mia’s costume, and of course, wanted to talk about how nice her butt was.
This might sound like “guy talk.” But not from him. This was him trying to determine if I was a threat. If he were to date Mia, could he have me around? Or would the two of us run off together? That’s what was going through his head.
No, I wasn’t the type of college guy who was looking to just hook up with a bunch of college girls. I prefer being in a relationship, which I had. I wasn’t blind though. Who didn’t know Mia was adorable? I think most of the guys in our class were aware. (Maybe a few girls as well…) and yes I certainly noticed the tight shiny black pants! But that was it though. Mia was pretty quiet in class. I never made any effort to talk to her (and she never talked to me). The thought of dating her had never entered my mind.
But, my roommate panicked when I agreed Mia looked great in the shiny pants. I was clearly going to steal his woman! He needed a plan!
I don’t remember why, but Mia and Julie were either at our door, or maybe roommate dragged me down to Mia’s room…? I remember we were all in the doorway talking. Roommate randomly told Mia I thought she had a nice ass. WTF? Why would he do that?!? Well, b/c he liked her. And by putting that out there, he could see her reaction w/o saying HE thought so. Was she flattered? Weirded out? Did it seem like maybe she’d be into me? My roommate and I were best friends at the time, and lived together, so, we were often grouped. It was always “Bruno & Roommate.” So, if Mia was cool with Bruno, then maybe roommate had a chance and could ask her out. This was his way of trying to avoid rejection.
Roommate decided we needed to be kept separate. He started hanging out with Mia (and Jerry as well). If Mia ever talked about her ex, roommate would always say, “Oh, that’s just like Bruno! He does that too!” Roommate did his best to convince Mia that I was just like her ex, so she’d hate me.
Mia wasn’t particularly nice to me that year given what she’d heard from my roommate (who I was giving dating advice to during that time, and the flowers he gave Mia were from me. Giving flowers to a girl was news to him, and then he picked dead ones).
Towards the end of the year, roommate did ask Mia out, but she declined. Roommate didn’t take it so well. He was miserable, so, I knocked on Mia’s door to see if I could talk to her on his behalf. Mia was busy and I was the last person she wanted to see. She yelled at me, kicked me out of her room, and slammed the door!
We all had dinner together in Little Italy before leaving school for the summer. Me, roommate, Jerry, Mia, & Julie, despite all of us not getting along so well together, mostly for reasons roommate invented. That was the night I think I realized I actually did have feelings for Mia. Uh oh. Well that could be trouble!
My roommate called me over the summer, and mentioned he’d decided he’d go out of his way to be “a dick” to Mia when we returned to school in the fall.
That fall, we were all together again one night in the dorm. Mia had commented that I had “very nice feet, for a guy.” Evidently her ex had gross feet. Roommate of course still had feelings for Mia and this sent him into a panic believing Mia was flirting with me.
My girlfriend called the dorm one night looking for me, I was out. Roommate answered the phone and told my girlfriend he thought there was something going on between me and Mia. He told her this knowing he’d get to hear me deny it next time I talked to her. That way roommate could hear the truth w/o asking me himself. You see what he does…
One night in late September, Mia knocked on our door looking for someone to go to Myrtle Ave. with her to get Chinese food. (Back then, Myrtle Ave was also known as "Murder Ave")
It was getting late. Roommate had already taken off his shoes for the night, so, he couldn’t go. That’s really who Mia was asking. I didn’t feel like going either, but I wasn’t going to let lil’ Mia go by herself. So, I went just to make sure she got to and from safely. We’d never gone anywhere together before. I remember the walk to Dragon Garden being awkwardly quiet. We got to the restaurant. I sat down, Mia ordered.
While waiting for the food, Mia walked up to me and clarified she was not flirting with me. I just had nice feet, that was all. Of course something had gotten back to her about that. I immediately dismissed it and said something like, “Oh you know how roommate can be.” She didn’t. Evidently, I didn’t really know either. We started comparing sophomore year stories. We talked in Dragon Garden. The whole way back to the dorm. Up to Mia’s room. Mia invited me in b/c we weren’t nearly finished. We sat in her kitchen while she ate her food. Then we realized it was almost 5am and we had class in a few hours.
Well, now I knew Mia was adorable, and fun and easy to talk to. I liked her even more now. And her stupid ex was back in the picture. And I had a girlfriend. And a jealous idiot roommate. It’s a little complicated…
Well, I’ll end my story here. I assume everyone here knows how it ends anyway. ;)
If I was able to upload these photos in order,
Photo 02 is Mia after cutting her hair following sophomore year.
Photo 03 is in Little Italy after dinner, we got dessert at Caffe Roma. Mia’s giving the finger! (Roommate had convinced our group that I filmed everything to use as blackmail. 22+ years ago, vlogging wasn’t a thing people did, so it was easy to make people nervous with cameras. No, that was certainly not the case)
Photo 04 is Dragon Garden where Mia and I went the night we learned quite a bit more about my roommate…
My story may make my roommate sound awful… which may be accurate… but I can also thank him. He willed something that wasn’t there into existence by trying to prevent what wasn’t going to happen. By trying to keep me and Mia apart, we got to know each other and bonded over that.
Jerry was also very quiet, and a bit odd. Roommate liked Jerry b/c he thought Jerry was “dark and disturbed” since Jerry was very quiet in class (and when Jerry had something to say, it was usually bizarre). Roommate was into “dark and disturbed” so, he started inviting Jerry along to hang with Mia (and Julie).
Had roommate not been an insecure idiot, our lives would be very different now. Sometimes weird stupid things can result in good things later. Glad I told him I thought Mia had a nice ass that night. ;) That comment certainly put our lives on a specific path. I think things like this are interesting, to me, at least. Had I said “eh, didn’t notice” where would we all be now? Who’d we be with? What would we be doing?
