I lived through the 70s and I never saw most of these things on anyone! Especially belted sweaters! Some of the fancier jump suits on performers. They are amusing.

(Honestly, seems like your hands should have some sort of special insurance policy, like Betty Grable's legs did :-) All of the above suggestions are great, and one comforting the other seems appropriate for the circumstances, but I must admit the suggestion of Azi with the "paint me like one of your French girls" look also caught my attention :-)
