AD-FREE, EARLY RELEASE: Scott Mitchell, Former NFL Quarterback talks about growing up with Chad Daybell

Scott Mitchell is a former NFL Quarterback, who also just happened to grow up with convicted killer Chad Daybell. Daybell even published Mitchell's memoir after Mitchell appeared on Season 16 of "The Biggest Loser". Mitchell says there isn't a day that goes by that he doesn't think of Chad Daybell and what he did. Mitchell sits down with Hidden True Crime hosts Lauren and John Matthias at their dinner table to process how the man he knew became the convicted serial killer behind bars.

We will be publishing this video on YouTube later this week, but wanted out Patreon's to have an early release video, free from ads.

PLEASE let us know your thoughts on this interview, or any questions you might have for Scott. We might just ask him some additional questions before we make this available to the public.

Tammy was THE BRAINS of the business!!

Kathy Stay

Who said he had a perfect score? PROVE IT!

Kathy Stay

They DID!!!!

Kathy Stay

Yes! CD put a horrible blemish on the LDS FAITH! I ❤️ My belief in the Church with all my ♥️. If others don’t choose that faith. That’s their choice. I’m no religious scholar, but please know, that I also believe in what Scott Mitchell believes in. As a faith. I feel brokenhearted for Chad’s Mom. For his siblings. Emma? Not so much! She threw Tammy under the bus! And shame on her!

Kathy Stay

Here is a sobering thought. My former college roommate, who has since passed away, her older brother, was mission companions with CD! 🤮

Kathy Stay

Scott’s story is so fascinating and relatable to so many people. I’m not religious, but it goes beyond that. Thanks again for a wonderful interview.

Kirsten C

I too am tired of hearing about CD. That being said… If Dr. John would embellish more about high demand religions or if you interviewed Dr. Steven Hassan; I would see more value in that.

I’m not sure if this is where to put this, but it is a crazy conspiracy theory supported by a Sound of Freedom “star”. 🤢 https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2023/07/15/the-adrenochrome-conspiracy-theory-pushed-by-sound-of-freedom-star-explained/ “…both Ballard and Caviezel have defended the adrenochrome harvesting theory in recent interviews.” Sheesh.

Sue

One thought…end your complete obsession with Daybell and cover an on-going trial for a change.

Ronald Helm

Really enjoyed this interview, BUT I get really tired of hearing people say "the first time a really cute girl paid attention to him" referring to Lori falling for Chad. Please stop with this. Tammy was a really cute girl! A very beautiful woman! She paid attention to Chad (unfortunately). It's frustrating to hear this over and over again in interviews. We need to remember that Tammy was gorgeous! We need to put an end to the ridiculous narrative that Lori was the only beautiful woman to pay attention to Chad, because that's just not true.

Jessica Donaldson

What a beautiful man he is, thank you for interviewing him and letting us hear mroe about his perspective on life.

WestCoastNanna

If Chad & Lori had left Alex alive - instead of "blessing him" & having Alex take a death drug - - - they may have had a REAL-LIFE fall guy! I just don't see Alex killing the kids - - Chad killed them! (Alex was close to the kids - especially Tylee (her demise was brutal {and may have been after she was gone} from what we could make out from the trial). WOW!!

A H

YOU HAVE A WIKIPEDIA PAGE SCOTT - - - AND NOT BECAUSE YOU MURDERED ANYONE! LOL (sorry - sad face). Julie Rowe "making up - her own near-death experiences!!" LOL HaHaHaHa! such a fake!!

A H

And Chad murdered for money - 1st Charles Vallow (R.I.P. Charles) 1M and Charles had the forethought to think of moving that money to Kay who could look after J.J. (sad face) then when Lori didn't get the insurance money - Tammy had to go (sad face)! Then Chad ($430K pay out from the two policies) gave each of his kids $5K +++ from Tammy's life Ins (which they have to NOW PAY BACK)!! CHAD KILLED TYLEE & JJ (and keep it "quiet" under wraps so Lori could continue to collect Social Security (Tylee for Joe Ryan's death (killed by Alex Cox) & JJ (bcuz his dad Charles Vallow's death - Lori's "enforcer - Alex Cox") THANK GOD KAY WOODCOCK stayed in front of the police/law - for those kids missing!!

A H

TAMMY M - praise God that you "hear & pray" to our divine Lord & savior! Thank you for sharing!!!

A H

Caterpillar - Cocoon - Butterfly story with Scott's DAD (BAWLING rite now) <3 <3 Thanks to Scott for giving us another perspective for the LDS Church!!! I donate monthly to Angel Studio's an LDS company that searches for productions/movies that reflect light & give those of us who don't want to spend money or time on the sheer-crap that is out at the theaters rite now! So thank you Lauren & Dr. John for bringing Scott on to our PODCAST!!!

A H

Value hearing from you Scott - Chad HATED HIS MOTHER!! And mostly bcuz she empowered her children to have chores & responsibilities at a young age (we all - being raised in a normal home) had chores! Chad HATED his mother & I believe that why he "became SO OBSESSED" with Lori Vallow!!!

A H

I’m more than ok! Blessed 🩷 That was in 2003. He had been out of prison 10 days before attacking me. The perpetrator never had another free day after my attack. He died in prison about 5 years ago. He had a horrible childhood and a head injury as an adult. My heart broke for him and I pray he was able to ask a Jesus for forgiveness before his death.

Tammy Morgan

Chad is a false prophet. He claims to have “the gift” but in reality he’s a toad 🐸 face devil who became a serial killer. He might be a Manson who never actually killed his victims but I truly believe he had a big part in dismembering and burning tylee. Which is even worse in my opinion.

Tammy Morgan

oh my gosh! I am so glad you are OK!

Lauren and John Matthias

Scott’s story about Chad’s dick behavior re the cost of the burial, and the story about the grieving mother, made me think of Dennis Raider, and how he loved to be cruel in his control over the rules his job had him enforcing. I have to wonder if it’s not a step beyond lacking empathy, and is in fact a glimpse at a sadistic trait, one that would show up later in how the kids were killed, and what was done to their bodies. Mr Important Chad Daybell, going way overboard. I think Chad Daybell liked to hide in plain sight, by appearing too meek to be the angry control freak and sadist he turned out to be.

Mary Hatchet

I think you were exactly right Lauren about Tammy not talking due to Chad‘s coercive control. I paused the video to come say that, and Dr. John was saying that it was the exact type of thinking that led Chad to murder. I love this interview, I am finding the guest to be so articulate and such a deep thinker. Not the easy route for us humans, I admire it so much when I see it. Extra challenging for our menfolk, therefore extra rare and admirable. PS I see you Dr John, and adore you, Lauren.

Mary Hatchet

The janitor was the Lord. I entered the restroom at work to find a man hiding out in a stall. My perception of this man was a janitor that I interpreted cleaning the bathroom. But he had a mask and a knife. Then I said to the Lord, this is my last day on earth, who will take care of my children? That very moment turned into action. Actions were the Lord not mine. He gave me the words to say and gave me the vision I was bigger than this mad man. I was able to overcome the struggle and I am here today to tell the story. Lord is alive and active- even in bathrooms❤️🙏❤️

Tammy Morgan

Great interview! Very insightful!

Sue Komernicky

The butterfly 🦋 story ❤️😭❤️😭❤️

Tammy Morgan

Fantastic! What a thoughtful (and thought provoking) interview! I’ve probably said this to you before, but Scott articulated it better than I could. Many stories in the Bible, and especially in LDS Church history give Chad every reason to believe that he is STILL in the right. It’s mind boggling, but the more he is “persecuted” (🙄🤢), the more he can justify his claims of being a prophet.

Kelley Gee

Chad had a perfect score on the SAT 😳how did he end up as a serial killer? How did he go through the years and accomplished so little. Even his publishing company was probably 80% Tammy.

Tammy Morgan

Another great interview!

Marcella Able

He really really was, ❤️ My boys are 23 and 21 now but they still talk about him.

Spring20

This was a great interview; I love how deep the three of you went. In reflecting on our book club conversation about religion and hearing Scott’s view on Chad and how Chad was able to twist things, I can’t help but think how wicked a person can become when taking something so Holy as the Bible and using it to justify evil, but that’s all it is, mankind justifying something that s/he wants to do so badly, that s/he repackages it into a beautiful box getting others distracted by the new wrapping paper, ignoring what is going on. I also agree that life is not about the goal; it’s about the journey and the people you have the honor of knowing along that journey. I also purchased Scott’s book from Amazon, not Chad’s (YIKES!!). Thanks again to the three of you for taking the time to meet with us at your dinner table, can't wait for the next meal.

Moo2

Interesting.

Kay Louise

lololololol

Lauren and John Matthias

I definitely think it's Tammy. Scott did not meet Lori.

Lauren and John Matthias

What a great pediatrician!

Lauren and John Matthias

Absolutely loving this interview! I am not a sports person but I did love the Biggest Loser and remember him from that:). The thing that stands out to me most is Tammy not speaking for the 2 1/2 months they worked in his home. So sad and upsetting the way Chad treated her. Great interview!

LoriM

Great conversation- I seriously think John and Scott should choose a sporting themed crime and do a one off episode for fun. I can see how much Dr John enjoys sport so much that even speaking to another sports person brightens his day ;-) Thanks Scott for your insight on Chad , no BS, and the nude reality show dream. Classic! And your strength and vulnerability at sharing your own personal growth.

Tad Auty

It wasn't the raccoon!!!😀🦝 I have a feeling he has an awful lot to say though!😀

Kimm Baker

Thank you for rounding off my week with a wonderful, refreshing interview. Scott represents the antithesis of Chad and his thoughts, comments and values were very well spoken.

JenAus

It wasn’t the raccoon 🦝 that’s for sure!!

JenAus

A very interesting person, Scott Mitchell. I wasn’t going to watch cause I’m not a sports fan. It ended up being one of the best interviews you’ve done.

JudyV

OK, now I'm crying. I'm listening to Scott's last remarks and realizing how it comes full circle with your first episode on Chad and the ending of that episode is reflected here so clearly. Reflecting Dr. John's remarks in that very first episode. Wow.

Katie Alosi

I weirdly feel so nourished by this interview. This. is. amazing. Similar and intersecting lives, two completely different outcomes. Scott's insights are meaningful and powerful. Fantastic interview! Thank you!

Katie Alosi

This interview was absolutely delightful! What a good human!

M Adams

He’s got the perfect voice for podcasting

Christina MacArthur

Love how you both look into the intricacies of these crimes, thank you for all you do and your upstanding coverage. I loved hearing Scott’s thoughts on Chad and his relationship and life. ❤️

Spring20

It was so poignant to me how Scott shared his concern for being real and transparent I was told once by a pediatrician when I showed up late to an appt with my 8 year old son who had a meltdown on the way because he knew he’d be getting vaccinated, I was mortified we were late and that my son was still melting down. The Dr said to me the patients that worry about being late and their children’s emotions are the ones I don’t worry about because they are cognizant of what’s happening it’s the people that don’t think twice I concern myself with.

Spring20

Really enjoyed this conversation! What a vast difference between two people that grew up in the same place! Scott is humble and kind and not self serving. Chad could learn from him, but he won’t.

Kayla Ehnat

I finished this and WOW! Scott is such an interesting guy, without Chad! He is incredibly introspective and he obviously wrote his own book!😀 I would love to hear more from him. Thank you John and Lauren for the early release. It was a great interview!

Kimm Baker

I was home sick from work. SO this Patreon drop was a treat to listen to in one setting. As always, great job Lauren and John. You asked the questions I wanted to hear answers to and then some and you both wrapped everything up so well at the end. I’m so affected by this case, I think of it daily also. As a phlebotomist in Rexburg it puts me in the same dr. rooms as Chad’s neighbors or ward members or police that worked on the case. Tuesday it was the ward clerk that worked with Chad that was in the same ward. Yesterday it was a teacher that works with Emma right now. She told me she happened to be in the hallway when the janitor this past week told Emma she “would come around eventually with what her Dad had done”, after Emma told the janitor that her Dad was innocent. The community and world continues to try to process it. It’s still so sad. I’m still amazed how the actions of Alex, Chad and Lori could affect so many people in the world. I had a friend who does Scott’s hair and he would tell me Scott’s stories because he knew I followed the case. It was neat to hear them from Scott himself. One thing I thought my friend told me was Chad and Lori had stayed briefly at Scott’s house? I was hoping to hear about that. But now I think my friend got it wrong and it was Tammy. Did Scott ever meet Lori?

ShaRee

Thank you Lauren and Dr. John for having this amazing guest on your show. What an incredible story about his dad and the butterfly. I love that my husband who's last name was Joy passed 10yrs ago. When a butterfly comes around stays longer than normal, I always feel it is him saying Danni all is going to be alright.

Danni Hull

Love the long format interview…both the content and the length

Cat Lady

I would have NEVER have guess this special guest!😀 Thank you for sharing!!

Kimm Baker

I am embarrassed for him.

Jeana Taylor

What a beautiful tribute to his father on his deathbed ❤️

JenAus

I’m 30 minutes in and enjoying hearing this guy’s perspective. Thank you Lauren and John. Just because the trial is over doesn’t mean people aren’t still affected but they need time to process before telling their stories.

JenAus

Please don’t ask him to say “loin fire”. He seems to have too much integrity for that.

JenAus

I appreciate Scott sharing his experience with Chad. I am sure it is embarrassing for him. But he never could have known what Chad was going to do.

Jamie Ferreira

Woohoo!
