Dr. John's initial thoughts on MATTHEW COLEMAN

"LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California surfing school owner was charged last Wednesday with killing his two young children with a spear gun in Mexico because he believed they would become monsters, authorities said."

This case caught our attention and hearts, and we want to address it. It breaks our hearts that these two precious children lost their lives. We see many similarities in the Daybell case.

If our Patreon supporters are interested, we'll continue to delve into this case while covering also covering the Daybell's.

There was one called "the stranger beside me."

Thank you for this episode. I truly enjoyed hearing your guys thoughts on this. I would like an update if there are any now.

Don’t you think that a lot of the factors of his personality and up bringing - you could be talking about thousands of people, that would fit that description or have similar experiences and circumstances- what made him go to the extreme place that he did is what we need to figure out - why certain people loose their shit and kill people - whether it’s Lori or Matthew or any other killer - what the heck is “normal” - god help our children when they get to be our age.

Julie Wilburn

Me too.

I would definitely like Dr. John, Lauren and Lori (?) to delve into the Matthew Coleman case... It does seem to have similarities to the Daybell case, at least at first glance. I hope this can be explored.

Because his wife wasn’t in Mexico. Perhaps she would have killed him . . . No loss BTW.

Since this is a federal crime kind of like the Manzanares case where it was on a different land/jurisdiction I hope the sentencing isn't low if found guilty which begs to question why Mexico?

I would like to hear Dr John on this. I think what really complicates these cases is that the “delusion” consists of something that many people who act sanely also believe in: Satan, demons, possession, etc. if Chad or Matt had said “the children suddenly transformed into Godzilla and began attacking the town” everyone they know would intervene to loudly tell them there is no such thing—but when it’s something many people do believe in how are they to be convinced it’s all in their heads?

It's interesting listening to this after the Eric Smith interview. QAnon is dangerous. And we ( the majority of us) can see how ridiculous they are. However, as we know, many of these off shoot LDS beliefs are also dangerous and misguided too. I don't know why people believe things just because someone says it's so. Lauren, if I remember correctly, the missionary friend who was with Chad when he had his diving near death experience said that he believes that Chad just had the wind knocked out of him. I'd be curious to know what Eric Smith would say in response to that. I do have a question for Dr John - Why do people believe these things with zero evidence? Anyway, love you guys and the work you do.

One family killer was John List. He belonged to the church I grew up in..Lutheran. I do not go to church anymore. I do listen to a smattering of different people with a diversity of spiritual beliefs. Your podcast is one. I even listen to a Southern Baptist. People I have respect for. Just no church

I’d love to hear from any ex girlfriends that he had. Was he a jeckyl and Hyde narcissistic type ? Sometimes the people with the over the top smiles and perfect posts on Facebook are overselling an image. Also re his belief system and his wife not feeling distressed A few ideas 1) she was scared to initially alert police to concerns about the kids safety because he’s so malicious if she dared speak up, he would do something impulsive- if she waited he may just come home. Or she could ask police to check if they’d had an accident ( without saying he was crazy or angry) so if he did return , police weren’t hunting him knowing he was bad ( if he’s paranoid they don’t like being viewed suspiciously - that can lead to drama ) 2) she had a similar belief system herself, so she didn’t think his religiosity or conspiracy stuff was a big issue because if it’s normalish in their social circle ( there are wayyyy too many people into these lizard/demon people ideas). But she didn’t think he would do anything this extreme, because she believed similar and hadn’t ever had thoughts that dark 3. He was a stable religious surfer dude - they were happy superficially like John said- and he had something happen to trigger some psychotic episode or increased dangerous thoughts and behaviours I don’t buy his smiley face photos and waxing lyrical about his love for this kids. It just seems a bit laid on thick Not saying he didn’t love them- but loves a 4 letter word. And some people’s idea of love is possession. My psycho ex was a master at being the perfect evolved artistic rational liberal guy in public- near family , etc We didn’t have Facebook but I bet he would have posted exactly as Matthew Coleman did- Perfect family For survival, I had to play along with my husbands image - I was always scared if I didn’t , that he may do something like this. He held the kids or my parents over me as a threat as well as trying to kill me a few times. ( no pity required- this was 25 years ago and the kids and I are all happily ever after ) So I could see that maybeee this dude is that same chameleon that’s too good to be true- I wonder if his wife challenged or questioned him, he labeled her monster DNA and then killed the kids to punish her. Also possibly to return and kill her. Or- did he just come up with this as a way to try to get off being insane- Was he just your usual nasty family killer- who was punishing his wife? But if he was never nasty to her, why would she be getting punished, unless it was some psychotic episode ? Too many questions - but my first one would be- has he got any ex girlfriends of ex wives ? They could give some insight if he’s jeckyl n Hyde control freak.

Hmm another case of “don’t just believe what an authority figure tells you! Ask your heart if it sounds like something that would make your life easier and fits with your existing dogma. If it does, that means God says it’s true! If it doesn’t, you can reject it.” just like Melanie Gibb, Shari, Red and Paul etc. Very convenient.

I'm always interested in what Dr John has to say. Also, we're overdue on seeing him on TGIF!!!

One reason I want to learn more is that so many previously rational people in my life have slid into q anon and anon friendly rabbit holes. It worries me tremendously.

Emily Lou

Yes Please! This podcast is like enrolling in a college class. Love every minute & have learned so much. I am a sponge!

Marcella Able

Always enjoy your interactions and thought-provoking discussion. You are a lovely couple and restore some of my faith in coupledom. ;-)

Elizabeth Nesbitt

Thank you for that. I haven't really delved into this case yet, but you sparked my interest. I got more out of some of the things Dr John said "in general" and it helped me understand things in my own life a little better. I wish he was my therapist! Anyway, keep up the awesome work. Love and prayers to your family.

Cathi

So excited to hear about Dr John’s part in a future documentary. Bummed about Lauren being edited out. I am interested in all that you both discuss and patiently await more.

CuriousCat

“Fear and uncertainty”, the qanon…I can see it. Dr John you are so helpful in explaining the human psyche.

RobynB

I’m very interested.

Emily Lou

Would love to hear more!

Christina Smith

I’d love to hear Dr John ’explain some behaviours in this case… just too sad!

Melinda Ngawaka

Absolutely interested. The parallels are striking.
