MELANIE GIBB- DR. JOHN TALKS ALL THINGS MEL

It's here! Thanks for your patience. While we usually share our Patreon episodes fairly unedited, I chose to find a good amount of sound from Melanie that Dr. John and I both brought up, so editing I did.

As always: Let us know your thoughts. We are already loving the conversation surrounding the podcast with Mel, Lori and Chad that we posted earlier today, and we'd love to do a follow-up episode discussing your points and additional questions. There is always a lot to share when it comes to Gibb.

Additional things coming up: I received a workbook in the mail about a class on Dreams and Visions taught at Preparing a People conferences during the era of Chad. I plan to scan the whole workbook so you can each take a look.

I also had an interesting interview with a woman who is fighting to save her marriage right now, While she didn't know Chad, her husband's been swept up in Julie Rowe's current beliefs. Will be sharing that soon.

Also, an event in April: A FIRM EXPO consisting of many familiar speakers will be held in Utah. I'm considering attending (for research sake). Speakers include: Hannah Stoddard, Jason Mow, Rod Meldrum,  THEJason Mow, and the controversial and well-known CEO of the non-profit Operation Underground Railroad, or OUR. His name is Tim Ballard.  Hannah will be speaking several times and is headlining Ballard's speech.

I'll share that schedule and where to buy tickets soon.

As for now: I'm going to go clean up some serious Elmer's glue spills and deal with some bedtime grumpiness (Banks, not John :) ).

She is so false and misleading. Psychopathic.

SWS Blyth

She is so strange. In the video she seems flirtatious with the police in her attempt to normalize it. Yet there have been deaths.

SWS Blyth

Melanie G was awful to JJ and Tylee

Amanda

I just listened to this. And even though I knew a lot, there are extra new icky things I've learned here. I've known Mel for 20+ years., and spent days on end with her and our families, talking for hours. She never said she had a bad memory or couldn't remember things when I knew her. But she was always detached. That's not new.

Distractions

I just joined your Patreon today, specifically to hear this podcast. I was wondering if you have plans to do an updated Melanie Gibb analysis. Sadly, she's a relative...

Distractions

So fun listening to you two interact. The obvious mutual respect and enjoyment of one another is heart warming ❤️

Drkatiedds

I can't help but wonder if Mel Gibb had had a fall guy like Alex, how many people would have died from Mel's life? Also, it would have been convenient for Chad to find a zombie within David Warwick that needed casting and death so Mel G could get David's life insurance (after they married of course). Insurance money that could be donated to the rejuvenation of the church of the first born. Also....as I deep dive into Mormon fundamentalists, I seem to find a lot of condemnation toward developmentally challenged people....I'll bet Mel's autistic son would not be alive if Mel G had had a fall guy/hit man like Alex.

Just joined... can I get this on my telly or just my phone

Charmaine Murray

Relistening now that Melanie has testified. Did it cross anyone's mind just because David was saying "zombie" he didn't believe but was playing their game to try to get information as to what the plans were for JJ. What if they called police at 2 a.m.? Look how police believed Charles? I also thought Chad went up to Lori's room with her that night - wasn't he there on some ostensible reason? Also is it possible some trauma happened to Melanie G in her past that makes her as she is, so detached, unemotional. Is it possible that Melanie didn’t agree with them 100% and although unemotional she was scared after Charles was murdered to speak up to Chad or Lori. What do you think she could have done? I'm not defending her as, as she said herself, she knew it or something was wrong in her gut. She's definitely in the thick of some part of all this but what should Melanie & David have done that night of supposed dream. What do people want them to have done? If did call police would they have believed them? The only thing I can think of is it would have started the hunt for the children earlier than Kay's welfare check and maybe Tammy would still be with us - because Tylee was already murdered by that night and JJ probably dead by 2 a.m. dream. Great episode - to hear a bit of both sides of Melanie Gibb. I personally think there's something wrong with her, perhaps mrntally, emotionally - just not sure what and I believe she does know more than she's revealed even to date; but even though you don't like her personality or memory issues - what's the expectation of how she should have reacted before finally going to the police after Lori told them she had JJ and initially she lied? Maybe David actually put her on the path to police. He's useless now though with his apparent dementia issues. His testimony was lame. I don't know what to think of him except he probably thought and is still thinking to this day - what did I get myself into by associating with these people. Thank you both for insights and comments!! It's too bad Dr. John cannot use his talents & skills in interviewing Melanie Gibb himself.

Mary Salgado

I think Melanie is more of a sociopath, to me she feels like one side of a coin that makes Lori Vallow. Its interesting how similar those two are.

Yery

I think she is detached enough to not connect emotions to memory, the items she remembered so far in Chad's trial is his prophecy and tenets of his belief, which really engages her. Really detached from the kids, she barely knew them from her testimony. I think she doesn't really have a formed personality that is her own, when Dr. John said she is a Zombie I laughed, that works. Thanks to Lauren and Dr. John for this podcast, it was excellent.

Cindy Ginter

This woman is disingenuous and devious. She has no Christian morals in her body. Another horrible person that clocks who they really are with religion.

Miss Claire Terry

What a great episode., thank you both. You ask the best questions Lauren. It reminds me of something a therapist said about my truly diagnosed Narcissistic ex-husband (I hate the way people throw around the Narcissistic diagnoses) They told me to understand that he could not imagine, nor empathize with ANYTHING that had not directly happened to him. So trying to get him to understand what he was putting me or his son through was futile unless we connected it to his past. And it worked. Sounds like MG.

Elizabeth

BTW, I'm EWrites on youtube!

Elizabeth

I have the funniest story. My husband edits documentaries. So it's literally his job to listen to voices ALL day long and create a narrative from all the raw film footage. The other night I was listening to the trial and my headphones stopped working on Chad's blessing to Alex. My husband says, "Who the hell is that? He has the most droning, boring, voice I have ever heard in my life.". This is a man who has heard A LOT of voices. Anyway, It made me laugh.

Elizabeth

Good grief… go watch CNN and have another vaccine. Maybe get therapy.

Jackie Ceman

I'm gonna be brave and say this /. For the first time in history we have a president on trial ! Yet i see no you tubers covering it ! And i wish someone would ! And i would love for dr John to analyze former president trump

Georgette Miller

AND MELANIE HAS AN AUTISTIC CHILD !!

Georgette Miller

If this point's already been made I apologize in advance, but I would like to address Melanie Gibb's utter indifference regarding Tylee's fate. What might make it less baffling is that Melanie's type of faith system truly doesn't believe in actual death, to the point that Tylee wasn't even really a person to her. (I'm willing to put down good money that if Melanie Gibb's own mother* didn't have the exact same faith system, and died, Melanie may be the sort of person southern ladies talk about in hushed tones, about how could she act like that, like she was just having a tragic chicken sandwich at the Chick-fil-A, during her own mother's funeral. And then getting into religion arguments during the wake.) In his first letter to the church in Corinth, Paul directly addressed "sexual immorality" in their congregation as a member and his stepmother were "living in sin". He chastised them all for "celebrating" it, said he passed judgement himself since nobody else would, and was on his way there to "turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord" (1 Cor 5:1-5). So it's already a well established mindset that someone's physical body is worth nothing if it means their soul will be lost; but if their death will save their souls from whatever fatal sin they were committing, or were going to commit, it's worth it to let them die in some form or fashion. Therefore, if they were already regarding Tylee through this bizarre zombie lens, it stands to reason that Melanie saw Tylee's human body as something hindering her [Tylee's] predestined work. In her mind, she cares more about Tylee's soul than she does her body, even going so far as to insult her body (the fast food thing). The mere thought of taking steps to ask if Tylee was okay was unfathomable to Melanie. In fact, it's safe to assume Melanie had already taken steps of her own to distance herself from the situation as much as possible, and to see it clinically as some sort of sacrifice. She can generate a reality for herself where not only does she bear no responsibility for Tylee's death, she will be glorified for whatever hand she had in it, because she contributed to the kingdom of heaven. Melanie Gibb just might be the most terrifying one in this bunch of actual weirdos, even more dangerous than Chad Daybell, because she's walking free and drinking tea. *assuming they had a great relationship lol.. not all mothers are great and Lori is a good case in point

Boxcar Willie Nelson Mandela Effect

I think it is possible that Melanie is on the autism spectrum. It has a genetic component and one of her children is on the spectrum. That might explain the apparent lack of empathy and her religion is a special interest for her. She is quite socially awkward. Just a thought

Juliet Donald

When it comes to David and his dream, listening to you it makes me wonder if they started to talk about Lori and Alex calling JJ a zombie, and started to wonder to themselves if it could possibly mean they were going to take his life. Maybe they started discussing hey where is Tylee? Maybe it was dawning on them or at least David, knowing they called JJ a zombie, wondering if they're going to hurt JJ and possibly killed Tylee. Something like that between them and they came up with an excuse to go in and frantically interrupt Lori or talk to Lori and come up with a dream to maybe try and convince her that David had this dream that you should not hurt JJ and then when they woke up they didn't see him and they knew that they were possibly right. But of course they could be liable for not calling and alerting authorizes if they were concerned for JJS life. But maybe not being sure their suspicions were right or they thought they were over reacting they didn't want to make a huge deal of something they didn't know was actually happening. Maybe it's why she stayed on the phone with Lori, trying to hear JJ or maybe hoping Lori would say something to squash their fear I don't know. Just a thought

Crystal Swannack

“Most of the castings were on……….Charles”. She took a long time to say his name. Why didn’t they ask her who else they did castings on? I bet they were on the kids, Tammi, Brandon and others. She is a writer. She has journals of what was happening. To say she doesn’t remember is trying to give herself the Casy Anthony defense. And her stance on Tylee, wow. Why is it that no one likes her? She was a child. A child that had a very very vain mother. That is hard on a child.

Nora Ann

What I have noticed about all the people who were interviewed by the police is that they are super careful to distance themselves from the fringe practices (or TRYING to distance themselves). They have to protect their membership in the LDS church because they could be excommunicated if they go to far (and they probably did).

JC

According to Melanie in the April 2021 police interview they are still together.

JC

The only way to see this clearly is to remember that, for all of Melanie’s nonsense, these are a series of crimes designed to collect insurance money and government benefits on dead relatives. We look at “what Lori thought” and “what Mel believed” because Mel has framed it this way from the get-go. There was no Chad when Alex was going to kill Joe Ryan for his sister. Chad’s BS gave Lori the cover and rationalization for her plans against Charles. She didn’t kill the kids UNTIL Charles screwed her out of the insurance money. So I don’t buy Melanie’s constant pointing to Chad as the guy in charge. He was her mark. Also, she speaks like a child and pushes her questioning of Chad by telegraphing to him what she wanted him to say. She knew this was recorded and knew that it could be evidentiary. She’s not stupid. My recommendation is to get a couple psychiatrists in from NY or Chicago ( no LDS states ) sand then see if she’s malingering.

Richard Lucas

It's so sad because imo if almost everything that happened did but JJ were still here yet Tylee wasn't I don't think we would be here.

Miranda

Thank you for doing this podcast on MG. Y’all are the best!

Paulee Gregory

IDK if someone else has mentioned this....but if you recall the night of the dream....the original statement from Melanie about this night was that Lori told Melanie and David that JJ turned into a zombie that night. Lori said JJ climbed all over the cabinets and knocked a picture of Jesus off and broke the picture. Orginally everyone questioned how they could sleep through this episode without hearing ANYTHING. Then, if I recall correctly, when her text messages surfaced showing they were awake and texting in the middle of the night is when the dream was brought up. I believe she and David heard what was going on with JJ...maybe they didn't know at the time what they heard but in hindsight they realized they heard the murder of JJ. This dream is nothing more than self preservation for both of them.

Chasie Beacham

But then again MG wanted the admiration from having great spiritual insight. Being able to write or lecture on the dream might get her material for another talk at a conference or a podcast. Not sure what is worse, as I guess they might not have though it was murder until later.

Barbara Roberts

When I first heard MG tell the story of the night that David had his “dream”, I thought that MG’s actions were over the top. There had to be more going on than a “bad dream”.

Ramona

This is the one we’ve all been waiting for! Loved it! I would love to hear Dr. John analyze Sherri Papini.

JB

Glad to be a member. Now I can hear even more insightful discussions. I was wondering has anyone seen Melanie Gibb's marriage photo? In the one I saw David was emaciated. His suit hung off him and he looked 30 years older. Does Dr. John think this could be guilt? He does seem to be the only one with a crumb of a conscience. Or maybe his relationship with MG has taken a toll.

Maryanne Bourgeois

You two are such an awesome team! I love being ato be a part of your two conversations. Thank you so much for being so authentic, open, and intelligent!

Crafty Criminalist

Such an interesting and spot-on idea. I'm not LDS but I have heard of journaling being important to many who are, as well. I do hope investigators have thought of this. I wonder if this idea should be reported to them? (I have no idea what information is desired as "tips" and I know they've had tons, I just want every bit of truth to come out in this case.

RR

So interesting! Thank you! Do we know if the rumor about Melanie & David breaking up is true? If so I hope investigators are still watching and interviewing. I feel that might bring some interesting things to the surface. (Side note, the discussion and comments about the hair stroking were SO on target and funny (if that word can be used at all in this tragedy). Your descriptions were spot on, she didn't open up to you after you pet her hair, ya don't say ha.

RR

Thanks, I think she knows every minute of every day she spent with Lori. She’s the ultimate fan girl.

Shari Farrow

😂 Your original comment kept me going when I knew I needed to finish —lol.

Lauren and John Matthias

Oh, 💯!!

Krista Steiger

They probably heard Lori in there wrapping duct tape around JJ.

Suki Pero

Excellent podcast! Thank you for sharing your insights. I hope the investigators called her back for more interviews. I also hope they were able to get David Warwick in the interview room. I totally believe they know more.

Beverly Werchan

Jason Mow: "I didn't even KNOW these people." 🤨🤥🤮

Tara

Oh yeah, she also showed emotion when talking about David’s “dream”. I don’t believe for one minute there was any @dream”. They either heard something that woke them up or suspected something.

Tracy Warberg Holliday

You're a braver soul than I! I wouldn't be able to stomach more than a few seconds of their hateful nonsense. Yikes :(

Tara

The most emotion I’ve heard from MG is her ridiculous argument with Lori and when she spoke of poor Alex, “bless his soul”. She remembers and I’d bet she remembers way more than she admits. She doesn’t want people to think she’s a bad person.

Tracy Warberg Holliday

Dr. John and Lauren, thanks for another interesting podcast.

Heather Carter

WOW awesome guys, mind blowing… I was in a “high demanding” church. It definitely shielded me from issues I didn’t even know I had. Thanks for insight

Alison Umpleby

I don't think MG ever grew up entirely emotionally. She is distant. Distant from everyone. I'm not sure she's even able to fully interpret her own feelings. I think she has them, but I get the impression she's been taught to smile and pretend everything's great, and push them down so far she can barely access them consciously. As such everything is appearances to her. So while dealing with the cult, she would go to great lengths to appear to believe it all, while keeping all members at an arms or greater length. Same at church, or really the dinner table.

B Sprak

😂

Krista Steiger

😧 Oh my GOSH. I am so sorry you had to be exposed to that horrific and terrifying experience!!! And, your point is very well made and I agree wholeheartedly. The thing with Ms. Fib is that I am afraid she just simply does not care.

Krista Steiger

I would welcome this offer ☺️

Lauren and John Matthias

I suspect that Mow's answers would be mostly: I don't recall, I don't remember, blah blah blah.

Erica A. Zwick

They all remind me of teenagers. The level of self absorption, lack of empathy and avoidance of responsibility. She thinks she’s the main character on My so called life or something.

Joanna Mulvaney

They both (Melanie and David) ended up saying it was late morning/early afternoon.

Krista Steiger

EXCELLENT! Thank you both SO MUCH! Gaaah I wish Dr. John would have been able to interview her. The way she was allowed to ramble on and on without giving a concrete answer, hardly ever, drove me nuts.

Krista Steiger

I have been anxiously awaiting Dr. John's thoughts on MG! I believe MG holds some keys to unlocking many of the unknowns in this case. I also believe she had a much bigger role in Chad's rise in this "cult" community than we know. I never miss a live or a post, and I love this community. Thanks for all that you both do, Lauren and Dr. John! Keep up the great work!

Becca Sellers

30 years ago I went to a friends house and her husband had a new gun with a laser sight on it. He pointed the laser sight of the gun on my forehead. I yelled not to do that , and he called me a whimp, pointed it at his own head and pulled the trigger. He thought it wasn’t loaded. My point is that I remember everything about that EVERYTHING. So I find it very hard to believe she has no memory. I truly hope there are civil suits against these people. She’s probably working on a book as we speak.

Shari Farrow

There was one moment near the end of her interview when she says something like, "this whole situation has really helped me have more understanding and stronger faith," almost as if it was all great for her personal growth and salvation. So detached, so self-absorbed, no apparent sense of regret or sorrow or compassion. Especially compared to the two detectives who seem to be carrying a heavy weight.

Laurie Stewart

I was rereading the 350 pager of FOIA and saw the last picture of JJ was 9-22-2019 at 10:48 ish. When was the property tour where depending on who you ask Chad, Lori and Alex were all there? I have Dumbell and Lorihor fatigue and don’t wanna look that up if someone knows and can tell me🤦‍♀️

Kat Willhite

Yes! I was going to mention this! I get the impression that journals are common to have in LDS culture so I would suspect she had a journal.

Tad Auty

One thing that stood out towards the end was when you both spoke on those that allow beliefs or ideology to isolate them and find it causing conflict. Excellent points and I would also add (because we’ve similarly had some longterm friends and extended family do similarly) that it seems not only is it the isolation but sudden intolerance for other perspectives and isolating from people due to that lack of tolerance for even hearing conflicting points of view.

Jennifer Grimwood Root

I think you're right about DW's dream. But...I'll also say this to offer an alternative. I have very vivid dreams, good & bad. In my dreams I have been killed many times and ways. For those of you who have heard that when you die in your dreams, you die in real life, this is not true. You don't. I've awakened in the AM so far every time. Even the time I went to the afterlife and visited my Mum in a 1940's speakeasy. I have been shot, stabbed, burned in an explosion, fallen from a height and many more very vivid scenarios. So it is possible David has horrible dreams. Mine are the result of PTSD from losing my family one member at a time until it was just me and my little brother. I started out with 3 brothers and 3 sisters, a Mum and a Dad. By the time I was 40, it was me, Mum, little bro, survivor's guilt and a bunch of PTSD. By now, Mum is gone too, but I've largely recovered from both the guilt and the PTSD...though the latter was complicated by my marriage to a sadistic psychopath who was married to me until "death do us part as he reminded me often." I escaped, and live a quiet life distant from him geographically.

B Sprak

I think the only thing Melanie “racked her brain about” was how to frame things so she didn’t look like a monster.

Lynette Butler

She seems so much more concerned with defending herself and trying to convince the detectives that she doesn’t believe the crazy doctrine and related acts, that it seems completely lost on her that they are investigating murders. It’s not about her and her beliefs, but she’s just too emotionally immature to get it. She is the epitome of self-centeredness.

Katie Marlowe

So there is a concept among Church members that if you repent you will not remember the sin. This is one of those concepts that are spread around and it isn’t true, it’s very misinterpreted and sort of a harmful belief. I feel like Melonie is trying to say she doesn’t remember to sort of say it’s all forgotten because I have repented!

Gena

I want Dr John to interview Melanie Gibb. I still really don’t know what to think about her. Her level of detachment is amazing. It would have to be to leave her kids to pursue this twisted cult. I wonder if she’s following the boring doctrine of the Mormon church now or if she has a new cultish branch to follow. Thank you for your perspectives on her. Thank you for reading all those books so we don’t have to.

Tamara Wakeman Sukohl

This is awesome! Great points about David Warwick!

CuriousinColorado

Thank you Dr John & Lauren for putting this video together. I was going to wait & listen in the morning, but I just couldn’t help myself. I knew that both of yours opinion on Melanie would be worth staying up on the eastern time zone. Never disappoints, but this group are always disturbing 😳

Marcella Able

I’m tempted to offer to go to the conference with you as some sort of support (emotional support or support staff)….

Gena

Melanie at one time wrote a book. I haven’t read the book, but let me assume it took some thought and memories and hard work to do it. I would think that Melanie would have a good memory. She knows / memorized scriptures. She wrote a book about her spiritual experiences. For her to say she doesn’t remember, I find that hard to believe. I would bet that she keeps a journal, and has for years. I would bet that had the detectives realized that hey this chick is a writer, let’s get a warrant for her journals and writing. I’m LDS and journaling is a big part of LDS life. I believe that she wrote daily in her journals. All she had to do was look back in them. I totally believe this woman journals, keeps a diary of sort. I would bet she wrote about everything that happened around her life. She was so into this group, she had to have written about the teachings and what she was learning. I wonder if she destroyed those journals. I may actually get her book and see if she says anything about journaling, or just to see how detailed her memories are regarding her spiritual walk. This woman is hiding everything. Or she’s going to write another book this time about her experience with Lori and Chad. And David? He for sure has journals too. The DA needs to get those journals.

Nora Ann

And, you HAVE to attend that conference! What a podcast THAT would be! Maybe you could get Mow to agree to an interview?? Or have him on with you and the good Lori for TGIF?! 😅

Krista Steiger

Thanks Lauren!!

Krista Steiger

So true about how she spoke about Tylee (and JJ ) As you said- 20-20 hindsight would in any other human, be “ you know Tylee and I didn’t get on well and she kind of annoyed me but now I know why she was acting that way. And that child didn’t deserve to be murdered. I wish I had protected her or done something to save her. “ To actually stick to hating the annoying teenager after they have been killed and disposed of in such an horrific way is psychopathic - in my completely uneducated opinion anyways ;-)

Tad Auty

thank you. I couldn't listen to the Melani, Lori and Chad interview. made my skin crawl.

Kim

I only recall one time Melanie got emotional and it was about Lori and Chad not being together and Lori not having access to A beautician basically. She was very engaged in the detail and beliefs but suddenly forgets it all when she’s worried about her temple recommend. I understand she is distant and cold but I think her memory is probably way better than what she makes out. She conveniently can shut things off when she’s caught out or has a risk to herself by other people finding out she’s not as wholesome as she makes out.

Tad Auty

So excited to listen right now! Thank you for posting

Bridget Dunnington

🌿👀🌿

CC

It’s like Christmas morning! Melanie tried to hide, but Lauren found her and Dr.John will tell us why Sweet Mel seems to suffer from memory loss!!!!

Stephanie Budge

Thanks for this! I will listen tomorrow, it’s way past my bedtime! Also, God bless you for being willing to listen to Hannah Stoddard. The very thought makes my ears bleed. G’nite!

Kate FitzGerald

Ok, NOW you may sleep. 😁 Haha, can’t wait to dig in! Thank you both!
