New Music Video! Bach: Sarabande No. 1

Hello Friends,

I'm so excited to release my newest Music Video, for Bach's Sarabande from the first Cello Suite!

This is the first time I've interpreted Bach in a more "Baroque" manner.  I had always been very very attached to playing all classical music in a hyper-emotional, romantic, dramatic way- and was adamant about playing Bach that way as well.

When I revisit pieces, whether they're shorter songs or full concertos, I always try to reevaluate the way that I approach them musically and technically, and when preparing to record this song I suddenly had the urge to experiment with playing it in a style that was perhaps closer to how people played Bach's music in the 1700's.  After watching many videos on YouTube of other Baroque Cellists, de Gamba players, and other Baroque musicians play in a more Baroque style, I was convinced this was the right direction to go.

Bach's Cello Suites were most likely written in the period of 1717–23 when he was the Kapellmeister in Köthen, Germany.   The surviving copies of the manuscripts (no original edition exists) were not annotated with particular bowings/fingers, so every cellist (and other instrumentalists!) has a different way of interpreting these pieces, which I love.

My previous 3 recordings/music videos of Bach's music (Prelude, Allemande, and Courante from Suite 1, all Patreon Supported projects, THANK YOU!) have been recorded in a more romantic style but this Sarabande is different in feeling and tone.   The original Baroque style is played with less vibrato, more ornamentations, and a different bowing technique which I tried to emulate as naturally as possible on the modern day Cello (My cello is a Gand & Bernardel French Cello made in the 1800's.)  I feel that energetically, playing the music in this way feels more spiritual, contemplative, and pure in a way that I have never experienced before personally.

In any case, enough rambling from me!  I really hope that you enjoy this piece, and if you'd like to purchase the song as a single, the  links are at the very bottom of this post.

Thank you so much for your support of my art and music through this awesome Patreon platform.

I look forward to completing this Bach series slowly but surely, first finishing off the entire first Suite (2 more movements to go!) and eventually the entire 6 Suite Collection.

Musically Yours,

Tina
