Community Challenge 96 | Change something about your workflow

Where to Start • Lesson Archive • Recommended Lesson PlanBook a Private Lesson

Hi Everyone,

This Community Challenge is a little different because I'm asking you to change something about your workflow, THEN write something based on your new workflow. When you post your creation to the community forum, please explain what you've changed and feel free to include a picture.

Part of musicianship is the lifestyle of removing barriers to entry in your own life. Wherever you live, you most likely have a kitchen. Thats a whole room of your house devoted to preparing food, which makes sense because you have to eat every single day. Imagine if you have your kitchen sink and stove packed away in the closet. Every single time you want to cook, you'll have to roll out these big heavy items and attach them to power and water. Imagine not having a fridge - ever time you want to make food you have to go to the store to get supplies.

Music workflow is the same way. Granted, music isn't quite as important as eating, so I wouldn't expect you to devote a whole room to it, but the concept is the same. Do you pack your guitar into the case and hide it in a closet somewhere? Do you tear down your audio equipment after every writing session? How many times have you skipped guitar practice because of how much time it takes to set up.

Some people have a little area of their home or apartment devoted to music. Their guitar is on a wall-mounted stand or a floor stand. They have a music stand with all the lead sheets they're working on. Maybe they keep their audio interface on their desk with their microphone plugged in. Maybe your amplifier could be considered a piece of furniture in your office or living room. Any little change you make can add up to more time spend playing guitar or writing music.

You might like this lesson I called "Gear, Goals, and Workflow" related to this exact topic.

You can participate in any previous Community Challenge at any time.

Hey Owl! Yes, you can do everything on something as simple as a phone voice memo app...I think Tausha (see the post below) has done this numerous times with amazing results. I'm assuming you have a PC, but it you happen to have a mac, iPhone or iPad, garageband is free.

I am new and have a quick question. I'm not able to purchase any music editing software like Ableton because it's out of my budget right now. Is one able to still do the community challenges without this software? I use Bandlab which is free if that counts for anything. Thanks!

Yahooo! Finally making a Logic template. For anyone who needs some direction on that, check out the first question on this livestream: https://www.youtube.com/live/Xj66G741Bk4?si=X738Lic7L6ofRgXN

Hey everyone! Let me know what you think of this one! If you don't want to post something you've written, or you're in the free trial period and don't yet have access to the Community Forum, feel free to comment here about something you've changed (or would like to change) about your workflow. Remember, it can be something small and doesn't have to be something you buy. It can just be something simple like "Now I leave my guitar on the couch, instead of in it's case in the closet" or something
