It's especially difficult if the parent(s) are nothing like oneself. Keeping touch with my dad was like a repeat of the same conversation year after year since our interests had almost no overlap, sadly. (Secretly) gay vegetarian son who doesn't like the outdoors much vs. an old-fashioned (but not malicious) hunter with a hobby for taxidermy. There's not much overlap there. Still, at least saying hellos now and then is better than nothing, and these two don't seem quite as different from each other (not that a couple scenes are enough to judge that). I've seen people mock ritual hellos that don't lead to conversation, but I'd argue that's far better than nothing. Drifting apart is sadly something that naturally occurs sometimes, but I don't think that makes saying hello offensive.
