Hozier Analysis- "To Be Alone"
Added 2023-08-15 17:51:39 +0000 UTCI discuss Hozier's use of diction, alliteration, personification, metaphor and more in this track from his self-titled album. I also discuss how this song fits into the rest of the album thematically.
Trigger Warning- Mentions of rape/assault
Note- Please excuse the terrible quality/lighting. I am still figuring out my set-up at my new apartment. I do plan on going shopping soon for some new lights, and I will start using my actual video camera again as well!

congrats on your move KP! i hope this new place brings more good things to you and your family π i only get the chance to comment now so i don't know if you'll see this lol. but anyway, i remember at the start of this hozier series, you mentioned that hozier's writing is known amongst the fans as female gaze-y. and i think this is one of the peak examples of that. we see this implication of rape in the lyrics and their struggle with intimacy after whatever happened, and hozier approached the story from how it feels to experience your skin crawling from your body, or that knowingness that there are questions you can never ask. something that male gaze-y writing won't even touch on
