Hozier Analysis- "Someone New"
Added 2023-07-31 02:53:51 +0000 UTCI discuss Hozier's use of exposition, diction, imagery, alliteration, allusion and more in this track from his self-titled album.
Note- So what happened at the end is that the hotel wi-fi basically timed me out. I had to re-sign in to continue getting internet. I am sorry if that ruined the video for you guys. I definitely got a bit thrown off when it happened 😭😭😭

To me, the Aretha line directly ties into the next one and I've always thought it was referencing her song Say A Little Prayer! "That you would pray for him" the "you" being Aretha. Love being here and your videos <3

2023-08-05 15:27:54 +0000 UTCAhhhh-- see this is why I love listening to songs in order! You make so many good points here! Thank you so much for sharing this perspective. I do agree that we are seeing a pattern in the way the speaker so intensely falls in love.

2023-08-05 15:27:04 +0000 UTCMy take on this song, especially considering the previous songs, is that he’s telling us (and the someone in the beginning) that we should already know how he is because he tends to this pattern. He falls in love fast and with this intensity for the people who come into his life even if they are only up for a casual thing. It’s like he’s so desperate to love and be loved that he’s carried away at any given opportunity and he ends up just jumping from problematic situationships to more problematic situantionships where he gives all he has and doesn’t get much in return (likely because he’s creating expectations that don’t match the reality). In take me to church he is devoted to this person who demands sacrifices. In angel of small death he lays his heart to someone who doesn’t seem to be super healthy/nice. In Jackie and Wilson he creates a whole life with someone who he just had a one night stand. I’m interested to see how the story goes on. I have been listening to his songs for so long but never in the “correct” order so it’s been interesting to see how this story unfolds as he continues trying to meet the end of this “burning wait”.

2023-08-05 12:59:07 +0000 UTCSomeone commented in a previous post how your videos helped them, as people who don't have English as their first language - and I 100% relate to it! It's so exciting to find myself understanding so many more layers and references to a song that Iv'e listened countless times before, but never really reflected on at a deeper level. This song also made me think of just generally finding beauty in other people on the day-to-day, not necessarily in a romantic way, but admiring their "strange perfections". Maybe that could be a way to fall in love "just a little bit" 😄 P.S. I'm glad to see you're enjoying the sound of the songs in the album! I know you really like to focus on the lyrical content, but happy to see you've found some new jams to add yo your playlist as well.
