Note- Sorry if the music is hard to hear!

Punisher Analysis- "Savior Complex"

Comments

The last 3 songs on this album are stand outs for me alongside Kyoto and chinese satellite! Cant wait to watch you dissect those

You make SO MANY good points here! I think you are 100% correct about Phoebe's lyrics. She definitely doesn't waste words. She says exactly what she needs to say and nothing more. And it really is fun to work to understand her lyrics, so I'm all for it! I also completely agree with you about the "apparent defeat" with "Moon Song" and "Savior Complex". These songs definitely seem like they go together, both sonically and content-wise. I'm definitely looking forward to whatever is next!

Haha, I definitely understood her sentiment with the airport, and like good for them--but that could never be me 😭😭😭 Also, I agree with you-- I don't think the rejection is a physical one. I think the speaker longs for the subject to open up to her emotionally and that just isn't happening the way the speaker wants it to.

Oooooh, thank you for letting me know, Diya!

hi! don’t do it on youtube cause i’ve heard other channels say it gave them lots of copyright issues

This one is so interesting! It’s funny, you made me realize I’ve completely misinterpreted the second verse for the years I’ve been listening to it😂 for whatever reason, I read “I drag you to the shore” as the speaker making the reluctant subject go to the beach. With that meaning, the rest of the verse gets even more confusing than it already is LOL. I agree that Phoebe’s songs are usually structurally closer to poetry than what we’re used to in a song. It’s really fascinating to me that she’s gotten so much mainstream recognition - totally deservedly! - but I wouldn’t expect this album to have such wide appeal. I think part of her poetic talent, and also what distinguishes her from a lot of other popular music, is how sparse her lyrics are. She never says too much (maybe in some instances it even seems like she doesn’t say enough haha). And that makes the times where she does say something plainly and simply *super* powerful. She doesn’t over-explain; just like a good poem, she makes you do the work. Thank you for letting us do that work with you!☺️ You know in stories how there’s typically an “apparent defeat”? In my opinion Moon Song and Savior Complex are the “apparent defeat” of this album lol, especially sonically; I think you’ll enjoy the last three songs quite a bit more.

It’s hard to tell where the enjambment ends, but being trapped in a car with smoke will definitely cause your eyes to tear up. On twitter, Phoebe confirmed that the line “show me yours, I’ll show you mine” refers to “secrets, and nudes”. She also confirmed on twitter that she is talking about “picking someone up from the airport and the horny drive home before you have sex”. If someone has been on trip it’s been a while since you’ve seen them and been able to be physically intimate, so that makes sense, but it is interesting that the next line is then “turn me on and turn me down”. The subject isn’t turning down the sex clearly, but maybe they are turning down sharing deeper secrets or letting the speaker save them or defining the relationship

Hi, Nicholas! I do plan to get to it! I have been super busy, so I am not sure when I will have a chance!

Can you please react to the new Taylor Swift song you’re losing me on YouTube
