The effective part of a spear is just a small piece of metal at the end whereas most of it is there to make sure that piece of metal does its job. E Company (101 Airborne) was the US' tip of the spear in WW2. You don't get drafted in E Company, you have to volunteer and then hope you make the cut. The men always had the option to bail out and go home which is what about 46% of the US' total number of army recruits did. People who don't want to fight are essentially dead weight and a resource drain so they have to be weeded out. E Company was an offensive invading force and every single soldier chose to be there. Like others pointed out before, even Blithe later on chose to go back on the battlefield. These are the types of people our protagonists are. Like WW2 vet and author Joseph Heller said: they're all crazy. It's fascinating seeing a female take on the show and how different it is from its intended male audience. The point of the show is in its title: "Band of Brothers". Notice how there are no mentions of politics or patriotism or morality. It's not about war per se but about the kinship of soldiers who are going through a war and how certain types of men yearn for it. Our guys' justification for going to battle is a sense of duty towards their brothers in arms first. This is what the show explores.
