Talk with Anthony Fantano

This was an interview for the purposes of a future video, but I figured I'd share it cause it was a great conversation.

Here is my weird prediction, based on being a depraved record collector for 30 years. All pressing counts have declined precipitously. Your standard "a bit more than local" hc punk band could sell 1000 7"s in the 90s-2010, but now only like Turnstile can easily sell that. But, metal has always been really big and broad in it's underground support, and also still sells a lot of records. I think black metal will be the next metal subgenre to be fused with some popular rock sound to break big. My bet is on the band Sadness from TX. Their song Sunset Girl is the blueprint. If you thought punk breaking made volatile characters angry...

As a Zillenial ('97) I really relate to the absurdist & anarchic Gen Z humor/content/music. I immerse myself in Tik Tok to find stuff as well as socially/via word of mouth. Going through the pandemic in my early 20's & also becoming disabled at 22 my taste has changed radically.. not least due to developing sensory processing issues due to my disability I love experiment/ambient/ASMR type shit as much as Punk/post-punk, jazz, classical etc. I think Gen Z's are acc alot more open minded than we give them credit for- & I don't think the relevance-obselence pipeline is inevitable. My 82 yr old grandma loves my cousin's Punk solo sh*t as much as my 5-piece jazz-fusion EP. There's always the risk of becoming the 'jaded' older generation- because of ageism. And I think we forget it's even an 'ism' as much as ableism- which excommunicates me from a lot of music spaces, for example. Of course, there is a power dynamic between older and younger generations, but it's just seen as the 'status quo' 'the way things are'- new replaces the old, etc. Does it have to be that way? When in the internet-age 'visibility' doesn't necessarily conflate with relevance. It's whatever's funny, niche, eye-catching. Whether its a 60 yr old shredding guitar solos on Tik tok or a Millenial/Gen X-er making vids on youtube ;) Thanks for the EPIC convo!! So much food for thought.
