“Lunch is here.”Lena announced as she exited the elevator into her private lab carrying a large box. Kara seeing how big the box was quickly rushed to Lena and took it from her. Looking in the box Kara was surprised to see it was overloaded with take out containers. At least two dozen of them. Based on the smells coming from them Kara guessed they were many different kinds of food. Kara wasn’t sure why Lena had ordered so much because Kara had only requested three hamburgers and some onion rings when Lena asked if she was hungry and Kara doubted Lena could eat that much food. Kara actually doubted any human could eat that much food.

“Why did you get so much?”Kara asked.

“Because I know for a fact that three hamburgers and some onion rings won’t even begin to fill your stomach.”Lena told her.

“It’s what I usually eat for lunch.”Kara couldn’t afford to buy the large amounts of food she needed so she went for cheap high calorie foods.

“Kara I don’t want to be impolite but how much does the DEO pay you?”Lena asked.

“The DEO doesn’t pay me.”Kara admitted.

“Why don’t they pay you?”Lena had guessed they didn’t.

“I brought it up once and was told that I didn’t get paid because if I was an official employee they would be held responsible for any damages I caused in the line of duty.”Kara had thought that was unfair but couldn’t really fight them on it.

“You have been living this whole time off of what you make at CatCo?”Getting a nod in reply Lena took a deep breath to control her anger.”When was the last time you actually felt full?”

“Not since I’ve been on earth.”Kara wasn’t given extra food when she was with the Danvers. She was expected to maintain the same diet as the rest of the family.

“Sit down right now and eat all of this.”Lena held up a hand to stop Kara’s reply.”No objections. You are going to sit down and eat until you are full. If that doesn’t happen when you are done we will order more food.”

Kara badly wanted to decline the offer but thought based on the look Lena was giving her that it would be a bad idea.”Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”Lena replied. She made her way to the kitchenette and pulled a cob salad out of the fridge and two cans of Pepsi. Making her way over to the small round table Kara was sitting at going through the boxes Lena sat across from her and handed her one of the cans of soda.”There are plenty of drinks in the fridge so drink as much as you like. If you want something specific I can have my assistant get it for you and before you say no she is currently sitting at her desk FaceTiming with her sister bored out of her mind.”

“Pepsi is my favorite so I’ll just stick to that.”Kara finished going through all the containers deciding to start with the four that contained T-bone steaks, mashed potatoes and a vegetable medley. Kara wasn’t a huge fan of vegetables but Lena had bought the food for her so she was going to eat everything.

“Did you always want to be a reporter?”Lena asked.

”No I always wanted to help save earth from the same fate as my planet. Something that they need all the help they can get because with the way things are going you maybe have a century if you don’t make major changes within a year.”Kara cut off a piece of the steak moaning at the taste.”This is the best steak I have ever had.”

Lena shifted uncomfortably in her seat at the sound.”Did you have any schooling on your planet?”

“Yes, I was the youngest member ever admitted into the science guild.”Kara was really proud of that fact.

“What is the science guild?”Lena asked.

“On my home planet there were different guilds that made up fractions of the government. To be part of a guild you had to be able to prove you could contribute to it in a meaningful way. Most don’t become a member of a guild until they are in their 20’s after a lot of studying and some type of apprenticeship with a guild member. The science guild was in charge of anything the government considered scientific. However some of the things would overlap with other guilds. Like with certain weapons technology the science guild would work with the military guild so it wasn’t completely set in stone who would work on what.”Kara explained.

“How old were you when you became a member of the science guild?”Lena was fascinated with the idea of government having a complete guild formed to handle scientific discovery.

“I was 6 when I was inducted.”Kara was very proud of that fact.

“So you are a prodigy.”Lena concluded.

“Yes, I was considered a prodigy.”Kara said.

“And when you came to earth why didn’t you do anything with your training and experience?”Lena would have thought that the government would have wanted Kara to help them invent things. Especially weapons.

“My ship came to earth when I was 13. I don’t exactly know the details but Kal was the one who put me with the Danvers. When I lived with them I was expected to act like a regular human. I would be punished if I tried to speak my language or celebrate my planet’s holidays. I was told my planet was dead and that with it went its customs as well and I was to act like a regular teenage human. That meant going to high school. I initially excelled but Mr. and Mrs.Danvers threaten to kick me out if I continued to get better grades than Alex. They said I was ruining her chances for a good college.”Kara had hated pretending to be less intelligent than she was.

Lena reached her hand out and took Kara’s hand in her own. Giving it a squeeze she smiled at the blond.”If you ever feel like celebrating one of your planet’s holidays let me know and I will celebrate right along with you. As a matter fact I would love to lean about Krypton and all it’s customs.”

“I would like that.”Kara found the idea of teaching Lena about her planet and celebrating holidays together very pleasing. Almost as pleasing as the feeling of Lena’s hand in her own.

Giving Kara’s hand one last squeeze Lena released it and went back to her salad.”So how did you get involved in journalism?”

“Well initially I wanted to go to college but I was told no. It was actually Kal that got me the job as Ms.Grant’s assistant. Journalism wasn’t even on my mind. I just thought it would be more challenging than fetching coffee and arraigning a schedule.”Kara told her.

“Did they also force you to work for the DEO?”Lena asked.

Kara nodded.”I was told it was my duty to protect earth because the planet’s leaders took me in. I personally don’t want to be Supergirl or fight but I didn’t really have a choice when the people who tell me what to do have a way to kill me.”

“Well now you don’t have to worry about that anymore.”Lena was already mid plan on bringing down the DEO. She had always played nice with them but learning the details of what they did to Kara pissed her off. Not just because of Lena’s pesky feelings for the Kryptonian either. Feelings that seemed to grow with every interaction.

“Thanks to you I don’t.”Kara would be forever grateful for the suit Lena made.

“Now that you have the choice what are you going to do with your life?”Lena was curious to know what Kara was going to do in the future.

“I really don’t know. I don’t have any degrees and have only worked at Catco so I really don’t have any place to go.”Kara was somewhat stuck.

“You could work at L-Corp if you wanted.”Lena offered.

“You want me to work for you?”Kara wanted to make sure before she got excited.

“With your knowledge and experience you would be the perfect candidate to work here. I would pay you a lot more than what you currently make and you would be allowed to work on what you wanted. Why to sweeten the deal I’ll let you work in my private lab.”Lena hadn’t planned to make the offer but didn’t regret it.

“Of course I’ll work for you.”Kara couldn’t think of anything better than working for Lena.”When can I start?”

“You can start whenever you want. I just need to speak to HR to get all your paperwork for you to sign.”Lena pulled out her phone and began writing an email to her assistant.

“I will need to give James my notice.”Kara didn’t want to deal with James or anyone else she worked with at CatCo.

“He will likely tell Clark right away.”Lena said.

“And then Kal will confront me.”Kara knew that her cousin wouldn’t stand for her not working at CatCo. He was going to be even more pissed when he found out that she was going to work with Lena.

“Do you think he will get violent?”Lena asked.

“Definitely. Especially when I refuse to do what he says.”Violence was Kal’s go to when Kara disobeyed him.

“Well now you have the suit so he can’t hurt you.”Lena was happy that she finished the suit before Kara quit her job.

“I can hurt him though and that will have him confronted you as well.”Kara figured Kal would go after Lena as soon as he found out about the suit.

“I’m not worried about Clark. He can’t hurt me.”Lena could protect herself against Clark. He was no match for her magic.

“True you have some pretty good defenses here.”Kara knew that with Lena’s security it would be very hard for Kal to get to her.

“So when do you think you will put in your notice?”Lena wanted to change the subject from what those defenses were. She trusted Kara but just didn’t want to tell her about her background right then.

“I think I’ll do it tomorrow if that’s alright with you?”Kara wanted to get it over with as soon as possible.

“That’s fine with me.”Lena was happy for Kara to be working with her that soon.”What do you think Alex is up to?”

“I have been checking in with the security cameras at the DEO and they aren’t mobilizing. I honestly think they aren’t going to do anything anytime soon because Alex was in the lab with Winn and they were experimenting on Kryptonite. They are obviously trying to figure out how your suit blocked it.”Kara told her.

“It would make sense that they wouldn’t want to storm the building with you being invincible protecting it.”Lena would have waited as well.

“I did learn you were right about them knowing how to protect me from it.”Kara hadn’t been surprised finding that information.

Lena smiled sadly at Kara.”I’m sorry Kara.”

“It’s fine.”It wasn’t fine but Kara didn’t want to waste time dwelling on hurt feelings while she was with Lena.”I do know that what they found is not the same as what you found because they only found fabrics laced with different stones and metals that worked. You found a way to make a suit that can be deployed from a bracelet. They have no clue how you did it.”

“They will never figure that out.”Lena knew that for sure they wouldn’t as she had used magic to make the suit.

“I hope they don’t because I like being free of them.”Kara said.

“As long as I’m around you will always be free of them.”Lena would do anything to help Kara keep her freedom.

Kara ducked her head to hide her blush.”Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Now I’m going to get back to work but I don’t want you to even think about leaving that table until you have eaten enough to feel full.”Lena told her as she stood from her seat and collected her trash.

“I won’t.”Kara promised. Picking up the next take out container Kara thought about what they had just discussed. She was excited about the job offer and couldn’t wait to get started. She wondered what Lena was going to have her work on. Lena said she could pick her projects so Kara hoped it would be something that helped earth not something that destroyed it. With Lena’s history Kara doubted it would be anything bad. Lena had always gone out her way to help people and had instrumental in putting her bother behind bars. Kara was not looking forward to the fight she was going to have with her own family. Her cousin was going to be furious when he found out Kara quit. Kara expected that a lot of collateral damage was going to happen during that confrontation. Then there was Alex and the Danvers. They were not going to be idol either. At least Kara had a way of monitoring the DEO so she would know when they decided to make their move. It likely wouldn’t be for at least a few days while they tried to figure out the materials of her new suit. Thinking about it Kara gave a mental shrug. It didn’t matter what kind of reaction she was going to get because being free of the life she was forced into was worth it any retaliation.
