Version 2 - The Log

When a creature performs an action, or makes a saving throw, DiceCloud v1 assumes you are playing at a table, and will be rolling those dice yourself, but as social distancing and online games become the new norm, the need for online dice rolls grows ever greater. The log is where those rolls will be displayed.

The log appears on the right side of your character sheet. For now it is the primary place to test out the new parser detailed in yesterday's post. Anything input in the log will be parsed, compiled, rolled, and stored in the log. Actions, checks, and saves will all eventually make their way to the log as well.

Instant transmission

One thing that can be frustrating using online tools to roll dice is the delay between inputting the dice roll and the result appearing. The roll needs to occur on the server, to ensure that it was performed securely and hasn't been tampered with, but that is a cause of delay getting the result back.

DiceCloud's rolls are instant. The server and client share a seed for their pseudo-random number generators, and they both make the same roll, getting the same results. This allows the client to show the roll immediately, but if the client is tampered with and the roll on the server doesn't match, it will be automatically overwritten by the server's roll when it becomes available.
