Color Theory - Light Skin Tones

There is a standard sort of skin tone that is sometimes referred to as "flesh color" even though there is quite a range of different flesh colors in real life.

I like to use different flesh tones than the standard one to give variety and richness to my characters. Here's a sample of the general range of 'natural' skin tones (for white people at least).

The guy on the left has reddish skin.

The top right guy has the standard "flesh color" skin tone. It's in the middle of the range of natural skin hues, between pinkish and yellowish tones.

Here's a guy with a more yellowish, sometimes called "olive skin" tone. It has more brown and yellow in it.

All of these colors can be further varied by changing the amount of saturation and lightening or darkening. This gives you a lot of color choices for your characters.

Most 'natural' colors are within the range from yellowish orange to light magenta.

Any colors in between this range would tend to be more fanciful and not realistic. They can be fun too.

Here's a range of characters' flesh tones.

Say, Johnny, greatest analysis and intuition of color relationships (theory) in the lightest flesh colors and tones. Say, John, they all remind me of the late and great Mel Crawford! (I wish I got to interview him like you would and could when he was alive then)
