Watch Out for Fireballs! 494: F.E.A.R. (Premium)

Paxton Fettel isn't going to catch himself, operative. That's why you're on a squad with the unlikely name of F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon), to hunt down the psychic commander of an army of clones. That's Paxton, the commander. F.E.A.R. does not hold up as a horror game because it's way too modal, but it's a very solid first person shooter with enemy AI that is still spookily good.

For our highlight this week, we have a time sensitive call to action: Save the date for Saturday, November 9 at 9:00am Eastern. That's when our fans at catgirls.cam will be holding a 24 hour live stream to raise money for the Mockingbird Meadows & Chicago Food Depository. The event is called BD4PP and it's addressing an urgent need for people dealing with food scarcity in Chicago.

I was too bad at games as a kid to progress very far, and was also a huge coward, so as a result, for the past 10+ years my predominant memory of this game is feeling a sense of dread at the image of a suspicious fat guy eating cheezy poos

The other game around this time that also blew me away AI wise was Far Cry, where the enemies behaved very convincingly in sandbox open world environments. That whole game before it became kinda bleh version of Doom was very mind-blowing, from squad enemy AI to vehicles and physics.

The obligatory Dark Souls reference is during the AI section. There's a nice video on YT by Prof. Tommy Thompson on the AI of Dark Souls, which is also noteworthy and peculiar - both FEAR and DS use goals, but quite differently. I recommend Prof Tommy to those who are like to learn about game AI. Love the show G and K, stay rad!
