Watch Out for Fireballs 477: Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies (Premium)

What if combat was less about hitting your opponent, and more about circling around them at very high speeds? Ace Combat 4 is one of the genre standards for the dog-fighting genre. There aren't that many games in there, so when people like one it generally stands out. But is there enough there to entertain the non-fan of the genre? And how did they manage to add an alternate reality plot to this?

Random Factoid: Did y'all know that Dig Dug is cannon or in the same universe/timeline/whatever as Ace Combat? If I remember Dig Dug is in the far future or something? Also I think it might also be the same thing with Galaga (?), anyways, I'm not going to google to find out again, I figure that's all you probably need and if you want to know more based on that then you can and if not I'm not writing a bunch more random stuff you don't care to know (I just remember hearing that odd factoid and all the details once upon a time).

I wonder which armored core they were thinking of when they compared this series to that one. I love love armored core 6, but the earlier ones maybe not so much.

Yeah, as a big fan of the series I can't defend the bad tropes of this game. Honestly, i haven't played this particular entry in YEARS, so i forgot just how much they want you to sympathize with Yellow 13. When people think of the big, melodramatic story they're probably thinking more about Ace Combat 5. The story and mission structures are more intertwined as well as varied. For me, the appeal does come from a place of "this sucks, i love it!", and imagining Mobius 1 as a sentient F-22 reading letters is powerfully funny.

I imagine Moebius 1 gets 20 of those “this guy you killed was awesome actually “ letters a week. Doesn’t even open them anymore. Big fan of this series and this game as well. Definitely have fond memories of the final trench run mission although in retrospect it does have real “but the heroes were too brave to accept the surrender” vibes

I am definitely one of those people for whom one of these would really hit the spot lol, especially since (in addition to all their other evil acts) licensing issues from the manufacturers of these planes prevent remakes or rereleases. One exception was 5 being a preorder bonus for 7 There’s Project Wingman, which I’ll play someday, but it takes place in the real world, which for me makes it a lot harder to go along with the goofy military pathos and such
