Ep 228 - Anti-Anti-Engelsism w/ Daniel Tutt

Sean is joined by @DanielTutt, host of the @torsion_groups and @emancipations_ podcast, to talk about the life of Friedrich Engels through the Tristam Hunt's 2009 biography Marx's General.

Is there truth to the argument, developed in the 1920s, that Engels was responsible for serious distortion of Marx's theory? What do we make of his 'double life' as both a carousing bourgeois and a disciplined revolutionary? How did the political views of Marx and Engels' change over he course of the 19th century? What was The Dialectics of Nature and how has so-called 'dialectical materialism' helped to dogmatize scientific socialism? And what remains of Engels' thought and practice today?

Join us for a fun and informative episode on one of the revolutionary greats.

Also, Kaan Kangal's book on Dialectics of Nature is really important and well worth reading. Anti Duhring is delightful if you like invective and critique

Alas, Poor Yorick

Condition of the Working Class is wonderful. It's early, so there's a fair bit of fairly gross 'national character' type discourse particularly about Irish people, but knowing where he ends up on that a few years later makes it more swallowable.

Alas, Poor Yorick

I love it. Great chat, thanks! One nitpick though is about the publication history of Dialectics of Nature. I don't think it could have been influential on the development of Plekhanov's Marxism because it wasn't published until the IML (or as it was initially the MEI) scholars in the Soviet Union assembled it from notes years after the revolution

Alas, Poor Yorick

Sounds to me like Marx and Engels could have been a bit spectrum-y. Parallel play

Shaun, Engles=Obama=historical pantheon? WTF dude!?!?, take that back! Excellent podcast, I need to read Engles, any entry level works? I watched “The young Marx” does that count?
