Composing/Producing Live in 3 Hours

Howdy everyone! Tonight's session (7PM CST), I'll begin by talking a little about gain/volume automation and some general mixing principles I use in my own tracks, and that I've heard in others.

After that, I'll be making some live music using the ingredients you all hand me in the comment section below, or in the live chat (available if you're signed in to youtube). If you're curious about a genre, technique, style, chord, scale, etc, just post it below and I'll try my best to incorporate it into tonight's composition.

Here's the link to join along:

Hope to see you there!

I see a lot of angry and/or dark in the comments, which means you'll likely have a mixer channel with distortion fx on it, my ingredient: put an EQ or Filter in the chain, before the distortion. What you do with the eq/filter is up to you, but heavy bandpass or notch filtering, or slamming 20+ dB bell curves into distortion is a ton of fun, especially if you're going for dark/angry :D

Oh, and I’ll say, the polyrhythm is more important to me - I want to see how you handle that in your DAW.

Hi Jake, I can finally make it to a session (yay spring break for kids!) As for my ingredients, I’m not gonna make it easy on you: I think dark funk with chromatic runs (from suggestions above) calls for: Harmonic minor with a 5:4 (or 7:5) polyrhythm. Bonus points for a tambourine!
