I might be too late for this question, but.... In terms of plugins, I don't quite understand the difference between Amps, Pre-Amps, Channel Strips, Riders / Levelers, Compressors, Limiters, etc. It seems like there is a huge amount of overlap in what functions these things are doing. I have similar confusion when I think of running an amp simulator into a distortion plugin, etc etc etc. I have no idea which of these things are essential, versus what's redundant or even just pointless. Thanks!
