Planetside has two new OPEN CALLS!
• WRITING FROM SCIENCE: how scientific fact can inspire speculative fiction
We’re looking for articles that explore how scientific fact can inspire speculative fiction, including the challenges of balancing scientific accuracy with narrative freedom. If you have a relevant scientific background, please include this in your pitch and bio. You might dig into the craft (e.g., how a scientific subtopic shows up in the history of SFF, how to read scientific papers for inspiration, how to fictionalize breakthroughs responsibly) or educate fellow writers to improve scientific literacy through careful representation of a given subject.
• GENRE MASH-UPS & REMASTERS: about the art and craft of blending distinct genres
We’re looking for articles about the art and craft of blending distinct genres into a cohesive whole. We’re interested in essays that offer historical context, practical advice, and common pitfalls (but without focusing on just one example). We’d also like to explore the process of reimagining classic works, especially those entering the public domain. What does it mean to pay homage to a classic text while making it your own? You might try analyzing the legacy of genre hybrids, offering a how-to guide for fusion fiction, or exploring key cultural considerations within a subtype.
Keep it focused!
Ideal article length is 800–1,000 words. Pay is $0.10/word on the final-draft word count.
