SteamID Performance – March update part 1 of 2

For the last number of months I have been optimizing SteamID as well as rolling out new features, bug fixes and tweaks.  Around 2-3 weeks ago now I made some major changes and so far, the site seems to be reacting a lot quicker. I need to say another thankyou to Trav who has picked up queries on Discord which allows me to crack on with server, network and site stuff.

The main database has seen significant performance increases and with the database growing day by day it’s a huge task to keep this under control and on a tight budget. A number of months ago I was quoted £1,200 per month (The cheapest I found on a short search) to just have this database hosted in a managed environment, since then I think its around 100GB more and with recent changes its going to get bigger quicker (More updates on features to come?)

The text searching services for Names,Groups,Summary, URLs has been moved off the rented equipment and back onto the owned equipment (More in update part 2) and its much faster!?!

While the performance has increased the amount of queries hitting the database every second has increased quite a bit, for example the Friends history is now updating with the last seen date in a data table with over 3.5 billion records things do get very busy. The smallest of

As always thanks for the patients and thanks to those who are active on the discord, I have noticed a few patreon members have replied to people asking for help and general just getting involved with new ideas or fixes.

I like to say I am not a web developer but this hobby seems to have really gone that way (Really wish I could do front end design…) so there is most likely better ways of doing tasks, I just have not found them yet.

Anyway, aside from the database performance tweaking, I am about to start on a long task of optimizing the way the SteamID website front end works for you guys who are using it and try to offload some checks and tasks off into the back end. The player rating system as an example has background tasks running to weed out any false ratings and prevent abuse.

We reached 250,000 users who have logged into SteamID although a percentage of that will be people signing in on alts but still a nice little milestone.

If you have ideas, as always please get on discord, and throw them in I’m always happy to listen to ideas.
