Birthday Dress | Vestido de cumpleaños [Opal] [Aracne] [Sköld] [Astrid]

* This story takes place after the good ending of 'WT: Between the Seams' and the beginning of the story of 'WT: Bone and Porcelain' and connects the main characters of both stories. Hopefully you like the first glimpse of Sköld and Astrid.

Aracne was walking through the city with a small leather handbag. Several meters behind her was Opal carrying several rolls of very high quality cloth. They were barely able to carry them, so they were dragging them along the pavement without much delicacy. If it hadn't been for the covers that covered them, the fabrics would surely have been ruined, but Aracne had anticipated this beforehand. Neither had concealed their strange features, so the villagers watched them strangely, but neither said, nor did anything to make them feel in danger. The big city was nothing like their small, closed village, where magic was feared and disrespected. Opal was still wary, waiting for something bad to happen to them as they crossed a poorly lighted alley, but Aracne seemed swollen with pride and happiness.

The castle stood in the heart of the city, imposing, and made of stone so white that it looked as if it had been thoroughly cleaned recently. Near the entrance a small group of people gathered around the scaffold where there were three wooden stocks with several convicts. The crowd was well stocked with rotting vegetables and defective fruits. Opal felt a shiver as they watched the three wretches. One of them would not be much older than they were. He had long brown hair and wild, yellow eyes. The young pressed the pass and urged Aracne to do the same.

Inside was even more impressive, both were amazed by the paintings of eminences, the carpets of confection and the amount of perfectly uniformed service that came and went without stopping.

"This is incredible," said the witch as she stretched out her dress. At least no one could accuse them of not dressing appropriately. If there was one thing Aracne excelled in, it was the making of original attire and complex designs.

"Excuse me, but... who are you?" A servant made them turn around, carrying a huge basket in front of him, almost as big as his own height.

"Oh, yes, what a fool. I'm the seamstress you've hired," Aracne improvised an awkward bow, though her spidery protuberance hit the ground long before the rest of her body.

"I see... It must be for the birthday of the great mage Astrid."

"A witch?" Opal asked in surprise.

"Mage," the servant corrected him with an annoyed throat clearing, "Follow me. I will take you to her chambers. She spends most of her time working there.

During the journey, Aracne determined that such a large residence was very uncomfortable; the stairs were endless and it had too many unnecessary rooms. Their modest cabin in the middle of the forest may not have been very large, but it was more than enough for both of them. Although it's possible that a couple of those paintings could make it look more stately.

"Here it is," the servant announced before knocking on the door of the room.

"Thank you very much," Opal thanked the boy and he soon disappeared with his huge basket.

"Come in." The voice from inside gave them the permission they dared not ask for. With a knowing glance they passed inside.

To both of their surprise, it wasn't a luxurious place, nor was it particularly large. Instead, it was crammed with objects, some as common as scrolls, books and inks, and others that not even an untrained witch like Aracne could have recognized. In front of a pile of papers that threatened to collapse stood the great mage Astrid. A little girl barely out of her teens, with the roundness of her age and a huge proud hat that only a witch from the tower of wizards could wear.

""We are Opal and Aracne and we are here to take measurements for your birthday dress," Astrid looked up and watched them. For a second she looked surprised. They both assumed it was because of their strange appearances. She stood up and then walked to the middle of the room.

"I've heard a lot about your extraordinary skills, besides, one doesn't get a chance to meet a spinner very often." "Astrid's eyes glittered with a hunger for knowledge. She was the kind of girl who loved books as much as she loved pretty dresses.

"I... Thank you," Aracne said as her cheeks turned a reddish color.

"She's the best!" Opal hastened to say.

"I don't doubt it. Should I take off my dress?" Aracne looked at the quality of the design and the fabrics and felt dwarfed. She was sure that her seamstresses were so good that she could not compete with them.

"It would be the most convenient, yes," she said in a whisper. Astrid stood in her petticoat while Aracne rummaged in her bag for something to write down and her tape measure, "I have brought some pieces of fabric with which to determine the design."

"I'm sure it will be a magnificent dress," Astrid smiled again and Aracne's doubts were dispelled. She nodded and began to work with her characteristic agility and confidence.
