2025-04-30 09:15:58 +0000 UTCThe humiliation online for money is something I saw first hand last year and I found it deeply disturbing. Storytime: I love the video game Subnautica. It’s this awesome combo of horror, survival and exploration taking place on a water world where you need to dive deeper and deeper under water to progress. It’s an awesome game and I love watching people play it because it offers a lot of freedom in its game play and everyone approaches it differently. Well, last year I stumbled upon a YouTube recommendation that was advertised as “I have thalassophobia (fear of deep water) and I play Subnautica!”. I thought, that sounds interesting, he will have to face his fears! It was one of the most disturbing things I’ve watched on the platform. This guy was not lying about having a phobia. He had these disturbing physical reactions while playing the game over and over. He constantly had to keep psyching himself up to continue by telling himself he needed to build his YouTube fanbase and that it was worth it. It went on like this for hours of gameplay. I had to stop after the first couple of videos because I started to feel complacent in someone’s humiliation and desperation. As far as I could tell based on his uploads YouTube kept showing me, he must have finished the game. This wasn’t the extreme of this Black Mirror episode but it was too damn close for comfort.

Devindra and Jeff’s reactions are priceless. Great ending to a great episode. This alone makes me glad signed up today.
