Tell Me What to Sew

Appliqué is the practice of sewing one smaller piece of fabric onto a larger piece of fabric to create a decoration, pattern, or image.

It’s super fun!!

I love it! I wanna appliqué everything!

I wanna appliqué! With you!

When?

When this account reaches 450 patrons (we’re currently at 412 as of Jan 4th [UPDATE: 445, Jan 16]).

How?

I will make a post for all 450 patrons to write their response to a question I will ask. I will then turn everyone’s one word answer into images. Each word-image will be cut out of fabric and then appliquéd onto one big sheet of fabric all together with embroidery and embellishments added as needed (In my eyes, embroidery and embellishments are always needed.)

What?

At the end, I will share a high resolution file for everyone to print off however they see fit, whether that’s using a home printer or having a professional print shop produce it on fancy paper. Or fabric! Or on a mug! The world is your oyster! Go nuts! (As long as it’s for personal use only, not profit)

I’ve never done anything like this before- I mean, aside from the appliqué part. I’ve done that a good number of times. But nothing on this kind of scale before or relying on others to provide the raw content for the piece or anything that has the potential to be, well, pretty freakin big. While I don’t expect all 450 patrons will participate, anything more than 10 is bound to need some growing room. How big will it be? How big can it be????

Like I said, this account is currently at 412 (Jan. 4), which means we’re 38 new patrons away from making this monster collaborative appliqué thing together.

I’m sure it’ll reach 450 organically, buuuuuuuuut if you wanna help it get there a little faster…..

Even happier to *have* your support! ;)

Awww, thank you so much for the supportive words! Wow, since the DAR days?? Dang! Thank you for keeping an eye on my internet shenanigans all this time ♥ And high five to embroidery!!

Happy to support!!!

Yay! So excited to finally be a patron! I've been following your work since Dar comic so I'm delighted to finally have some disposable income to allow me to show some monetary support after the years of entertainment. I, too, got into embroidery during lockdown, so this project is even more exciting and inspirational to me. I love how you approach your embroidery, using different fabrics and techniques to make the full piece. It's like collage meets sewing. I never would have thought to do that. So inspired 😍

Using Thread Magic, I've gotten better results with the older metallics, but yeah, Diamante is smoother to begin with. :) Sadly, it doesn't come in as many colors.

Becky Fish

Diamant is one of my favorite metallics. It's so much easier to work with than most! (Particularly the older DMC metallic threads, which don't like to behave at all.)

Haha, I'm the same!! I'm so excited I get to be on the receiving end of people's input and I'm legit SO EXCITED to see what this is going to look like! I genuinely have no idea!

For the last decade, I basically haven't had the time to take on freelance or commission work, and I've really missed it. Having to translate other people's ideas into images gets my brain lighting up in a way that just doesn't happen when I'm drawing exactly what I already had cooking up in my head. I'm really looking forward to getting fresh stimulation from (possibly hundreds?!) new people who are thinking of stuff that hasn't even occurred to me. Also, I love Amanda. As an artist and as a human being who has been there for me when I needed help. Fuck yeah, Amanda Palmer.

Erika Moen

Ooooh, excellent suggestions, thank you!

I already gained 11 since I posted this! 27 to goooooooo.

Ahhh so excited! As a patron, i really enjoy having input into artists' projects, even in small ways (like answering a poll about what color polkadots to use, for example.) Not to dictate what someone makes, or because i think that since I'm paying them they should cater to my opinions... but simply because it makes me feel connected to both the artist and the patron community! I appreciate being a part of the collective voice that might insipre or enhance a new creation!

Zena Darling

Oh my god, I'm so excited!!! If you get hundreds of posts, you could easily make a king sized quilt like purely out of applique. Or.... maybe....... just maybe..... adorably tiny appliques?!?!? I love the idea of finding a way to creatively bring together a bunch of different responses from your patrons. Reminds me of when Amanda Palmer got her patrons to send in some kind of object that was meaningful but that they needed to let go of. She took a cool photo with All The Things arranged all around her. Then she ritually burned All The Things. I'm so here for the crowd sourced applique collage!!!!!!

nice! May I suggest trying DMC Diamante or Light Effects floss? Or Satin! For the metallics, use Thread Magic, it's a very good conditioner that will make it glide easier. With that and shorter lengths of floss, you can make stuff sparkly! There's even flourescent and glow in the dark Light Effects floss!

Becky Fish

Wow I love this, can’t wait!!

Cassidy Coleman

Ooh this is such a cool idea! Let's go new patrons!
