What I Made in 2022 (1/2)

What did I make in 2022? More than can fit in one post, that's for sure.

January

During one of my routine visits to Goodwill (secondhand shop), I found this giant photo canvas print of the Flat Iron Building in New York City and I thought "I bet I could fill that up with tiny naked people cut out of bits of paper" and so I did.

(Almost) every day of January, I added one (more or less) new figure  and I named the piece Naked City 122.

From the same Goodwill on another expedition, I found this really cool t-shirt design and I thought "I bet I could embroider something on that" and so I did.

This French quote by Michel Serres about the difference between exchanging goods and creating human culture resonates with me, and it's also hella wordy so I figured it'd be a good space-filler for that center circle.

I'm disappointed with how I sized the text and I never managed to mount the finished thing in a way that I liked, but c'est la vie [Takes a drag on my cigarette as I lean against a lamp post, the moonlight shining off my beret]

February

I was still on my paper-cut-out-figures kick, so I filled up this Goodwill frame with some more. There's a whole locked post about it on the Oh Joy Sex Toy Patreon.

Then I made some motherfuckin' hand sewn Ohmu plushies.

March

Leetle hand sewn starfish!

Obviously I had to embroider the words Sassified and Ham! on an old t-shirt to go in these other Goodwill frames.

April

You know, this drawing of Duchess RavenWaves may actually be my favorite thing I drew this year.

The original illustration is from a box of lingerie I found in an antique mall, but with just a little bit of tweaking I turned it into some ridiculous fanart to post on my Lady LovelyLocks Instagram account

Oh! And Speaking of Lovely LadyLocks fanart based on pre-existing art...

Jay Wolf surprised and delighted me with this fucking gorgeous coloring of my adaptation of La Fiancée Hésitante by August Toulmouche.

You can't unsee the LLL maidens now, can you?

May

Once upon a time in a group chat, my friends and I were talking about consentacles, which is probably self-evident to the kinda pervs who found me through Oh Joy Sex Toy, but for the rest of you sweet baby innocents: these are tentacles that ravage you sexually with your consent, so everybody has a good ol multi-hole-pluggin time. Then somebody typo'd it as consenticles, which naturally led to speculation about a Greek mythology figure who invited consensual touch of his testicles, and so on and so on, you know how group chats go.

This (giant) piece still isn't finished, but someday it'll be a portrait of Consentacles and Consenticles with their legions of adoring followers.

June

How... how do I even explain...

I'm embroidering a scale-model replica of the Lady LovelyLocks doll (with actual original dress) and box, which I will someday assemble together so it's a multi-dimensional piece.

If this is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

So that was the first six months of the year, stay tuned as I get the second half ready in its own post.

What did you do or experience in 2022 that makes you feel proud or happy or creative or human?

That's exactly how I've been pitching it to myself. Every thing, even if it doesn't work, gets me closer to where I wanna be. Thank you for the gold star! It's gonna go in a pride of place. n_n

The Ferret

Good for you for trying that treatment! Something I've been telling myself pretty regularly with this last year of Weird Health, is that even when a medical treatment doesn't work, at least that is giving me concrete information in SOME way which will help narrow down the options for finding the thing that WILL help. (Hopefully) And also, props to you for being brave and following through on something new and challenging. Gold fucking star.

Erika Moen

Thank you!!! I'm still shook that we managed to do it

Mandy Wright

Thank you!

Erika Moen

Bwah, thank you!!

Erika Moen

Oh jeez, I translated "mohair" as "mohawk" in my brain and was imagining quite a creation for your sweater XD

Erika Moen

Thank you so much for sharing your 2022 art with my patrons and me! I love seeing you all make :) I especially dug those portraits with wings (angel and insect) over the subjects' faces. And CONGRATS on keeping up a more-or-less daily drawing practice!! That shit is HARD, I can only do it for short stretches at a time. GOOD JOB.

Erika Moen

Haha, I interpreted it the same way you did! Some kind of app/robot(?) that does housework XD

Erika Moen

Ah! Shing is great! They have been inspiring me since we both little high schoolers on the same Gargoyles art forum in the early 00s XD

Erika Moen

First home!! Oh wow, congrats!!!!

Erika Moen

Oh man so many good arts! As for me the biggest thing was towards the end of the year, I finally went and got rTMS treatment for my anxiety and depression. It sadly didn't help but I'd been thinking about and agonizing about it for so long it was kind of a relief to finally go and try it. It really helped me feel more in control of my life and things going on. I also knit a whack of hats and scarves for friend and family and even found time to make stuff for myself n_n

The Ferret

You made so much lovely stuff!

Silke Ceulemans

Also I **adore** the Consentacles work-in-progress!! Hope the new year holds more tentacular good times for you! (OFMD s2 coming out will mean lots of new tentacle fanart around at least! 😋🐙)

I love these month updates!! I have really, really struggled with creativity this year. I meant to make Christmas/holiday cards, but we haven't fully unpacked after a September move (and we moved earlier this year as well, and 6 months before that...it's been a whole journey tbh) and I haven't had the energy to pull out those paper things to get crafty. I did knit a really cute rainbow mohair and silk sweater earlier this year, which I've worn A LOT. Also, I have almost finished a nice cowl I am knitting as a gift for a friend, and I did a gorgeous little watercolor of and with my sister who is visiting me right now. So maybe I got my craft mojo back just in time for the end of the year?

The housekeeping work I'm talking about is more about making sure that the stuff I download doesn't sit around in my Downloads folder. :P Actual physical housework, that's a whole other matter!

Spiffy Voxel

Oooh would you mind expanding on the automated housekeeping tasks you've figured out? I've got a Roomba, which is great for me since I hate vacuuming, but I don't have a way to automate, like, dusting lol. The biggest other chore that sucks big time for me.

Despite it being a really rough year for me in so many different ways, I am proud that I managed to (mostly) keep up my daily diary drawings, and *also* did enough work for my fandom account that I had a few to choose between for most month when putting together my Year in Review! [https://www.instagram.com/p/CmJfoIvu00L/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= ] This blog is super inspirational and so are you Erika!! ❤️

M Aidan

* I (finally) got a diagnosis of my autism, better late than never. * I got a handle on my finances. * I got my tax return done early! * I learnt how to use automation tools to make my Mac and iPhone do a lot of tedious housekeeping work for me. * I got a LOT better at Getting Things Done and avoiding procrastination. * I did a massive decluttering this year, selling off or giving away books, tech and clothes. I'm now feeling MUCH better, both physically and mentally. While there's still a lot of uncertainty out in the world, I've done what I can to give myself a strong foundation and the resilience to (hopefully) take action on what I can affect locally to me.

Spiffy Voxel

This is amazingly creative. I love it. It is so important to be creative, in life, or you stagnate. You are not stagnating, and I love the naked people on the Flat Iron building. Heck, I loave all this stuff. It reminds me of the stuff that Shing Yin Khor does.

Laura J Testa-Reyes

First, love this review and love your little paper people AND OMG you are the best place for LLL content hrrnng..! As for me, my partner and I bought our first home and took so many walks and photos around the local historic graveyards. And I've managed to keep up with my "Line-A-Day" writing journal!
