Sketchbook

Normally it takes me well over a year to fill up a sketchbook, both the pages with my notes and the covers with stickers.

This book, however, has been different. I only started it three months ago and I’m down to the last… 11 pages?!?!? I stopped writing here so I could eyeball how many are left (“a couple dozen”, I assumed) and then I realized, whoah, this isn’t many pages at all, so then I did count them and there aRE ONLY 11 PAGES LEFT IN THIS BOOK??? This would be more impressive if I could tell you how many pages total are in it, but I peeled off the information sticker in June and there are way too many to just sit down and count.

Wait, no, ok, I did it. I counted. 80. 80 pages. Of course, each page is double sided, so that’s 160 pages worth of usable paper surface. Normally, like I said, it takes me over a year to fill one up because I have rarely drawn outside of work over the last decade and use my sketchbook, instead, for writing To Do lists, journal entries, and whatever other transcription duties I need to perform.

In the last handful of months, however, some switch just fuckin’ flipped and I have been drawing like a motherfucker pretty much every day. It’s been really fun! And it means I am burning through these pages. Which also means I am quickly running out of time to decorate the covers before this book is retired. So!

I dug through my collection of collage materials and got to work with some Mod Podge. (Fancy lady illustration is from Jan Brett’s Beauty and the Beast children’s book and the squash blossoms are from a diet book)

(Blue flowers are by Katherine Watson and I don’t know who made the tree illustration, soz!) It’s now sufficiently covered with still a little room left over in case I find a few more odds and ends I want to preserve.

11 pages! (Well, 22 when you count both sides) 11 pages to go! I can’t believe how much I’ve been drawing these last three months. Good job, me. I’m proud of you.

Here’s a straight-to-pen sketch I drew tonight of my friend Dwam, based on their photo they posted just a few hours ago)
