Ep. 799 - Heretic

Comments

I'm even wayyyyy later on this episode than you. I'm an atheist but I felt the same way. Grant's villain was like "What if r/atheism was the bad guy". Rarely have I been so out of sync with the Filmcast crew on a movie. I thought this one was pretty lame, and not nearly as scary or as smart as it thinks it is!

Nick P.

Just saw heretic on max. Loved it. As a Bahai it was fascinating though was amused that it isn’t in the mix of major religions, as it is the direct “sequel” religion to Islam.

Reynaldo K. Cruz

This comment will probably go unnoticed because I am late listening to this, but, anyone with a deeper than surface level understanding of Abrahamic religions can see how sophomoric Hugh Grant’s character in Heretic is. The movie would have blown my mind in high school or college, but after learning a lot more about religion and faith, it just didn’t do anything for me. Unfortunately, it’s the kind of “philosophy” you find from people who are anti-religion. Honestly, I found the movie making me feel much more confident in my faith is a Christian.

Every time I hear that first bit of 'weekly plugs', I then mouth 'weekly plugs' as if I'm singing my favourite song. What is wrong with me

I swear I’ve heard them mention the Fall several times in the last couple years. Especially regarding it not being available anywhere. This was in conversation, not as a what you’ve been watching though…

Olivia Oliver

Yeah. I deleted Threads from my phone and now just cruising Reddit.

Olivia Oliver

Sure thing! https://letterboxd.com/xplodera/list/every-film-mentioned-on-the-filmcasts-slashfilmcast/

I can't tell you guys how much I loved listening to your conversation about the election results. I was really moved Jeff's wife and Davindra's daughter's reactions. I was in the middle of a workout at the gym and started crying. We'll get through this. But we're going to have to grow and fight harder than ever against corruption and misinformation. Love you guys.

Zion Brock

Linus, can you share that link? I'd like to check it out!

ElectroLund

seriously, that's a such a great idea. Jeff, I wish we lived closer. I'd love my boy to join your wife's club too. take care man

Ditching Twitter was such a good decision for me…years ago it was kinda fun but recently, esp after Musk took over it was adding absolutely nothing positive to my life

DarmineDoggyDoor

That’s a shame! Both times I saw it was a packed house, and while there were walkouts there were more than enough people left for it to still be a raucous experience.

Cameron Stewart

I had 3 people walk out opening weekend leaving me alone in the theater.

Nervous_NRG

The Man from Earth was awesome!

Jae

Don’t worry, Jeff—I LOL’d at “The Wiccaning” 💀 solid

Viv

Absolutely. Such a fun cinema experience. I will forever cherish it.

Mountain of Conflict

A huge part of what made The Substance so memorable for me was seeing it in a packed theater full of unsuspecting people, and hearing them all collectively lose their minds at the climax. Gasps and screams and laughter all at once. Watching it at home alone will simply not have the same impact.

Cameron Stewart

I want to second Jeff's endorsement of The Man From Earth, starring Tony Todd, among others. The premise, which I won't spoil, is just so great that you can't help but be immediately drawn in to what is being discussed. And honestly, it would pair decently with Heretic, as there's some very intriguing discussions about religion in that film. Tony Todd was also in The Crow (the original 1994 film), which is an amazing movie. RIP, Candyman.

Stranger2Reality

I love the idea of building a community of boys that aren’t toxic misogynists. They need a cool name though. Maybe “The Reckoners?”

Mission Impossible is setting up a reboot of the franchise. Mission Impossible: The Resurreckoning

Mate I don’t think anyone else cares despite your many posts. Maybe let this obsession go

Mark P

Still crazy to me that this line is in the show notes of every episode but Dave is not telling anyone to use it for Episode #800: "or call and leave a voicemail at 781-583-1993."

Papool Chaudhari

Jeff you're not the only one that felt lost after last week. With all the negativity that's sure to come for the next 4 years, I have gotten off Twitter/X and I have stopped watching any type of news.

Tre

The Fall makes a new record for the longest span between the first and latest mention on the show! It was first mentioned in episode 33. Sincerely, the guy who made that Letterboxd-list of all the films you’ve mentioned.

Linus

I was hoping the second one would be Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Reckoning And the third: Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Reckoning Reckoning

Wags

Tony Todd's "I want my fucking money!" from The Rock is even better.

Mountain of Conflict

To the point of it being the last one, Tom Cruise said he hoped to be like Harrison Ford and Indy. He did The Last Crusade and still did 2 more eventually. There is totally a chance he comes back in 5-10 years to do another. But i think between the budget of this reportedly in the 400M range and the MI:DR budget being around 300 and only getting 545WW (vaguely remembering but that was the ballpark figures), I think this is going to be like the situation we had with MI:3 leading to MI:GP, a 5 year gap and seemingly the last one where if it's underwhelming again we wont get more. In that case it did well and we got a bunch more. If FR does really well maybe he gets another crack at it in a few years as a soft reboot, maybe as Ethan and a new team.

Jacob Chimilar

it's also the first with a "the" in it. I feel like MI: FR would be better.

Jacob Chimilar

The only way to fix the new mission impossible title is by adding another reckoning: Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 2 - The Final Reckoning
